Q.
why do I have to take 5 medications for bipolar rapid cycle dissorder with psychosis?
MARY JO
A.
I really cannot even begin to answer this question without more information. Generally speaking, a combination of medications are often used to treat bipolar disorder. A mixture of anticonvulsant medications (such as Depakote and Tegretol), lithium, antidepressant medications (such as Wellbutrin and Prozac) and antipsychotics (such as Abilify and Zyprexa) are used. The lithum and anticonvulsants are used to treat the manic episodes, the antidepressants to treat the depression, and the antipsychotics to treat any psychotic symptoms like delusions you might experience.
If you feel you are being overmedicated or that your current combination of medications are not controlling your symptoms, I suggest you bring it up with your doctor or mental health professional. I hope this helped in some way. If you would like to write back and supply the names of the medications, perhaps I can answer more specifically.
