Final Exam

Prologue

A dark gray cloud-like shape hung above the de la Vega hacienda, watching its residents, invisible to the human eye. Its steely eyes calmly scanned the interior of the house as if the walls were not even there to present any kind of an obstacle. A few moments later, another phantom shape joined the first one at his post.

"It is time for one of yours tonight," he said in a voice deprived of any emotions.

"Which one?" the first phantom asked without taking his eyes off the living room, where the family entrusted to him for protection sat peacefully by the fireplace.

"The young one."

The first phantom turned to his companion; his eyes glistened slightly. "Is it not too early for him yet?"

"The Council decided that he should be given the test. He deserves to be asked. The Council wishes to use the coming opportunity for this test, and you are to conduct it."

"So I am not to interfere?"

"Not until you are told that he is yours."

"I understand," the first phantom said in a deadened voice.
