"Monastario's Monologue"

by Susan Pearce

Of all the men in California
I'd be the richest
If only these babosos
Would heed my wishes!

If Zorro hadn't come along
And foiled my plans
I would have married Elena
And captured the Torres lands.

But now here I am
On my way out of town
In disgrace and disfavor
That I cannot live down.

That Diego is Zorro
I'd bet my last peso
And if at sword point I had him
I am sure he would say so.

From out of nowhere
This masked bandit appeared
And with each plot I concocted
He quickly interfered.

Yes, the Fox was so wily
Sly and too clever,
At my every turn
He spoiled each endeavor.

But it didn't take long
To surmise what the truth is.
My plans and my schemes
Needed to be much more ruthless.

To catch a Zorro-Fox
Requires much more cunning,
So I set up a trap
To get Zorro out of the running.

I thought that Martinez
Would play the part well.
He could rob, kill and plunder
And no one could tell.

To discredit Zorro
He did many misdeeds.
And in no time at all
My plan began to succeed.

He robbed the townsfolk
At the Inn and my party,
'Til the real Zorro took over
With a duel stout and hearty.

Then robbing the Mission
Of the crown of the Virgin,
He mocked this El Zorro
By killing an Indian.

Yet out of the blue
The plan started to unravel.
To his hideout in the rocks
I was forced to travel.

When jewels began appearing,
Confront this traitor I must.
For he didn't follow instructions,
And this man I distrust.

When to Martinez I queried:
Just what is going on?
Up went his ire,
To the sword we were gone.

After many a swift thrust
And a swipe now and again
His sword made its contact--
My hand felt the pain.

Now, how did that Diego
Discover the secret?
He appeared on the rocks
And took over the fight.

And now as I watched him
Move in that awkward fashion,
A bungling swordsman
Still I saw the touch of a passion.

Suddenly I had it!
I knew it made sense:
De la Vega was the outlaw Zorro,
Always on the defense.

I knew then that I had him,
His luck had run out.
You, sir, are Zorro!
I wanted to shout.

No one can beat Martinez,
Be so clumsy and inept
His skill I would challenge--
The blade will tell yet.

So I would make a new plan,
And all in good time
I would catch this bandito---
Make him pay for his crimes.

Though the Viceroy's visit
Was quite a surprise,
I used the occasion
To unmask Zorro before his eyes.

Yes, in front of the Viceroy
Stood El Zorro in the flesh,
My moment of glory!
And now I can rest.

I could see Diego and Zorro
Standing in grave defeat,
While I stood in the triumph
Of revenge oh so sweet.

But what is this?
What is happening here?
He knows you, de la Vega!
And supports you, I fear.

How can I convince them?
You aren't what you claim.
I will force you to admit
That Zorro is your name!

So there I stood,
My sword at your throat,
Now that I have you,
"I have won!" I can gloat.

But a note by a knife
On the door has been thrown
El Zorro on his black horse
Came riding into town.

I have lost all credibility
I am under arrest.
I must go back to Spain
In shame and detest.

But I know in my heart
I was right all along.
Diego de la Vega is Zorro
Who dares prove me wrong!!
