"Faithful Friends Forever"

by Jennifer Schooley

He stood outside those pearly gates
in spite of offers to come in.
His friends' last words had been,
"You be good. I'll see you soon,"
and with a pat, he'd left.

His promise of, "I'll see you soon,"
now held him to his post.
The invitations to come in
had all been turned aside.
His friend had promised he'd be there,
now he'd faithfully wait his call.

His mind went back to all the times
they'd asnwered calls together:
"Action!" "Cut!" "Rolling - One!"
The cheering crowds, the quiet strolls,
and now -- his solemn promise.

One day he heard a voice,
that all familiar whistle;
His head sprang up.
His heart stood still,
for a moment his nostrils quivered.

With joy he ran to meet his friend,
his promise had stood firm.
Together man and faithful horse
went through those gates together.

No more the clank of steely swords,
No more the crack of whips.
Instead they rode those peaceful hills
and reap their rich reward.
