"Arise, My Friend"

by Jennifer Schooley

On a quiet night so long ago
I stood alone in the misty light.
The sound of silence rang loud below
As our world was clutched in evil might
The thrust for justice
throbbed strong in my soul.
While the cries of "Save us!"
rose from the silent valley below.

At once I knew that wealth, while kind,
to some carried more than noble birth.
It laid deep within my soul a bind
to rise above the gentry way
and find a new self-worth.

And so, a knight upon my trusty steed,
my army strong, made up of one,
we took up fight for each misdeed
and broke the grip of evil -- and won.

Yet today, my shadow still plays
upon the distant wall
and my spirit still will not delay
when broken souls begin to fall.

So to you I hand my sword.
On your shoulders my black cloak falls.
Arise, my friend and heed the calls.
