"Anna Maria's Lament"

by Erin Barnard

I remember his promise he made
So very long ago,
But he failed,
And with his failure went the love
To which I was entailed.
He promised me
In these very words,
"We will meet again."
But we never did.
I thought our love was so strong.
I thought that we would marry.
How wrong I was,
When I gave him my heart to carry.
I was betrayed
With my utmost trust,
All the while believing that
His principles were fair and just.
But as I reflect on this more,
Who is my love?
Besides the man who makes my heart soar? He is El
Zorro, the righter of wrongs. Why was I so blind before?
Why could I not see?
His soul belongs to Lady Justice.
But I know his heart belongs to me.
Zorro's place is with his people,
Their needs are greater than mine.
California needs him
Body, soul, and mind.
And now I finally understand,
But if the time ever comes
That Senorita Justice gives him leave,
I will be here.
Holding to that love dear.
