§ Reefa §

Reefa was born Jerry Vincent at 7:28 a.m. on the morning of the 28th of February 1979. The youngest of three brothers, Reefa picked up his love for music at a very young age despite not having a musical background. His father was a businessman, his mother a housewife.

He spent his first six months of school in S.RK.St. Paul's, Seremban, and later moved on to S.R.K. Kelana Jaya for the next 3 1/2 years. At the end of standard 4, Reefa moved yet again, this time to S.R.K. Taman Dato' Harun, PJ. But that wasn't the last, nexed he moved back to Seremban and back to St. Paul's institution for his form 2 to from 4 education, only to move back to Dato' Harun the very next year.

After leaving school, there was only one thing he wanted to do - music. Unlike his two elder brothers James and Jason who got into the IT industry, he enrolled himself for a sound engineering course, which was funded by his father and brothers. He studied at nights and worked during the day to support himself in the hopes of someday being in the music industry.

Reefa's dream finally came true when he was discovered in the rap competition held somewhere in PJ in late 1997. Although coming in 2nd, he managed to catch the eye of now label mate, Poetic Ammo who were coincidentally present at the contest to check out the show. They soon hooked up the young rapper (19 at the time) with a producer, Illegal who later on recorded Reefa's first demo for Positive Tone. After that, he was sent home to await the decision on whether or not he would be offered a recording contract with the independent label. The moment of truth arrived about three weeks later when he received a phone call from Illegal, he'd been offered a contract with the best indie label in the country. And the rest they say is history.

Soon after the signing, the first solo rapper from Malaysia started working on a couple of tracks for a hip-hop and R&B compilation album, Tricks & Tales which boasted big names like Innuendo and Poetic Ammo, old-timers Naughtius Maximus along with new-comers Emberz of Soul and Ferhad. He knew this was an opportunity of a lifetime, and although a first timer, he gave it his all and managed to come up with Uptown (a sexy, laid-back styled track produced by G-soul). The other track was called Hip-Hop Supply (a much harder and darker song that is entirely about standing up for hip-hop music).

Tricks & Tales was released into the market on the 16th of December, 1998.

This officially booked Reefa a place in the music industry, the only industry that he ever wanted to be in, and in a few weeks, he had the pleasure and satisfaction of listening to Uptown on the radio for the very first time.

After the release of Tricks & Tales, Reefa started doing show all over the place. He performed at underground gigs, charity events, launches and all kinds of events, and he loved it. Along the way picking up all he could learn to prepare him for the slow and hard climb to the top. Not long after, opportunity struck again. Just so happens that Camelia, who was recording her 3rd album entitled Memori, had asked Illegal to produce 2 tracks for the album. One of which, a remix entitled Erti Kehidupan, which the prodecer fell screamed out for a rap verse. Reefa was called to do the job. Two weeks later, they recorded Erti Kehidupan. The duet with Camelia took Reefa on shows to Penang and to her hometown, Sarawak. These were the first out of town gigs that he had performed for, soon more followed with road shows, launches and other events taking him to different parts of the country.
