| Vick: A Fat Cat Dirty Bird |
Michael Vick signs with the Atlanta Falcons for big bank. The number one NFL draft pick, Michael Vick, signed a $62 million, six-year contract with the Atlanta Falcons, making the richest rookie deal in history. "There's been a lot of hard work," Vick told the AP. "It all paid off in the end." Paid is right. Vick is guaranteed a little over $15 million through the first three years. The deal was already in the hand of the Chargers who had the first pick, but they weren't willing to meet Vick's price.
A day before the draft, the Falcons traded with San Diego for the first pick of draft day - and the Falcons club had its bank book ready. Atlanta gave up three draft picks and receiver Tim Dwight (their best) to get Vick. The young quarterback played just two years at Virginia Tech before turning pro. As a redshirt freshman, he led Division I-A in passing efficiency and finished third in the Heisman Trophy voting. In the 2000 NCAA Championship, Vick had a stellar performance, passing for 225 yards and running for 97 more against Florida State. The Hokies lost 46-29.
