TOMORROW IS PROM NIGHT

By Christina Jauregui

The seniors’ time to shine is finally here. After four years of long discussions, preparing, and excitement, the countdown is over. Soon the arch will be up, and prom night is just a day away.

The night will commence with the traditional block party, where the seniors will be strutting their stuff for everyone to see. The block party is located at 940 Slocum Ave. from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The seniors will then depart in their luxurious limos, and the long awaited prom night will begin.

The 2002 Senior Class selected the Westmount Country club in West Paterson for their prom. Cocktail hour will take place between 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. All night the seniors will be enjoying music, including their prom song, “It’s So Hard To Say Goodbye,” from Do It All DJ’s. At midnight the prom will be over, and the seniors will be off to wherever their limos take them for their after-prom activities.

The prom was arranged by the Class of 2002 Advisor, Mr. Lucrezi, and the prom committee. We at The Crown would all like to wish the seniors a safe and wonderful prom night.

HEROES VISIT RMHS

By Lisa Pscolkoski

June 6, 1944- to most, this was just another summer day 58 years ago. But talk to some of the older residents of Ridgefield and you will hear a very different story, especially if you chance upon 89 year old World War II veteran Mr. Tony Pope, who was a recent guest speaker of history teacher Mr. Kraushar at RMHS. That June day 58 years ago was no ordinary summer day for the 30 year old Pope as he stumbled upon Omaha Beach, quick to find bullets flying at him from all directions. June 6, 1944 was the first day of the D-day offensive, the first stage of the invasion of Normandy and for Pope, recently drafted into the Army, it was a new life altogether.

Mr. Pope’s visit to Ridgefield was the third in a series of Holocaust and World War II-related guest speakers. Mr. Pope followed appearances by Mr. Fred Barko, Ms. Laura Tobias, and Dr. Affuso. Mr. Barko discussed his harrowing experiences surviving Auschwitz, Buchenwald, and the death march from Poland to Germany. Ms. Tobias informed students about her life as a Jewish child living under the yoke of the Nazis. Dr. Affuso discussed his experiences as a captain during the Vietnam War. Mr. Kraushar remarked, “Oral history serves as the perfect supplement to textbook information. Through these speakers, students saw history come alive.” Much thanks goes out to the speakers for sharing their experiences with RMHS students. Thank you to all the veterans who have fought for our freedom, and thank you for your hopes for our future.

KEEP POST-PROM FESTIVITIES SAFE

By Raisa Gonzalez

With prom season upon us, all those attending the function have visions of prom weekend on the brain. In keeping with “de facto” tradition, many have plans of spending that weekend at the New Jersey shore. This conjures up images of frolicking on the beach and strolling along the boardwalk. It also raises the serious issue of drinking and driving.

It is common knowledge that drivers with an increased Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) are more susceptible to car accidents, highway injuries, or worst of all, vehicular death. A surprising 20% of traffic fatalities occur as the result of DWI incidents; furthermore, over half of those who suffer fatal traffic injuries have a BAC of 0.2% or more. Reckless drivers who test fate and the law also run the risk of license suspension or revocation, impounding or confiscation of their vehicles, incurring fines, or jail time.

Considering such stark statistics, prevention of the above mentioned scenarios is a necessary objective of prom weekend. Although this is a pressing responsibility for everyone, incorporating safety provisions into the festivities is no complicated task. Simple precautionary measures can secure that the prom and the weekend after will be a safe and enjoyable experience for all. Here are some steps to follow: volunteer to be, or to decide upon, a designated driver; inspect vehicles to ensure air bags are fully functional; don’t drive after midnight to avoid potential drunk drivers; and never forget to wear your seat belt!

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Dear Teachers and Students of RMHS,

The curtain is about to close on another year at RMHS; many are responsible for RMHS’ fame, which will leave this year to be one of the most memorable and historic nine months ever etched in history.

We were deeply saddened by the events of September 11, and that moment is one that shall not be forgotten long after we graduate. Everyone joined together and gave their hearts and efforts to help raise money to aid the September 11 funds. During the holidays, students also helped to aid the hungry and gave a large amount of toys to children with AIDS. I wish to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their outstanding efforts and display of bravery during the uncertain times.

I am also proud of RMHS’ choruses, Royal Chorale, and bands for all their hard work and achievements. The Academic Decathlon also made history, by going to the national finals for the first time.

I present this letter as a final word from your Student Council President. First, I wish to thank the teachers of RMHS for helping me expand my horizons and believing in me when no one else did. Second, I’d like to thank the counselors who helped me to become someone. Finally, to the students of RMHS: you kept me going when I was ready to give up, helped me in times of uncertainty, and finally, worked with me to accept challenges.

In conclusion, I will share with you this: there are many paths on the road of life. Whichever direction you choose to take, may you be successful in your endeavors.

Sincerely, Christopher C. Gagliardi, Student Council President

UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL WITH FRANK CLERI

By Danielle Conti

Born in Secaucus, Frank Cleri has lived in Ridgefield all his life. We find him here at RMHS, finishing up his years in the Ridgefield school system. Frankie has an older brother, Rich, who graduated from RMHS in 1998. He also has a younger brother, Mike, who is a junior. Frankie is a car aficionado, especially of his, which is a red ’79 Chevy Caprice. He has fixed it up and added a big block 350 engine, an edelbrock intake manifold, and carburetor to increase the horsepower. Also, he has installed long headers to enhance the sound coming from the engine. He adds, “My car is my independence; I’ve put so much time, money, and effort into it, it’s the only thing that’s really mine.” Frankie enjoys hanging out with friends and his girlfriend, freshman Tania Valdivia.

After graduation Frankie plans to join the Air Force and specialize in para-rescue. He’s decided to join the Air Force because he feels it is his duty to serve his country. Mrs. Bazerman is especially grateful to Frankie for the fine handcrafted podium he built for her last year. “Frankie is such a sweet guy; I’m definitely going to miss him when he leaves for the Air Force,” comments fellow senior Raisa Gonzalez.
