A Lesson in Hell

New Player Lesson starts in 15 mins in Hell. The topic will be Basic Moo Etiquette and How to set up your character. To get to Hell, just type: hell

Hell
This place is about as far from Pern as you can get. It's a bar, you can tell that much. Along one wall is a huge row of windows that offer a nice view of space, and you notice spacecraft bustling about from time to time. Graffiti is spray-painted on the other wall. Numerous comfy chairs, couches, and tables fill the room. It's a good place to hang out OOC for a while.
You can easily see that this is a public place. If someone tells you to leave, tell them to go to Pern.
You can type 'return' to return to the place you came from.

Jueann smiles, "By adding to the discussion, ask questions and learn?

Odessa just blinks.

Jueann is terrible at math.

Rikaeli is doing matrices too.
Kyrayna says, "My other alt is the one I'm worried about... should I have her in here or does it matter?"

Jueann says, "it doesn't matter. "

Jueann says, "We'll start in about 5 mins. Any questions, comments/"

Kyrayna laughs. "It's better than wnohgb right now"
Rikaeli shakes her head.
Kyrayna has given up on wnohgb for the time being. No use RPing if it wont let you talk.
Saisukei shoves the remains of her computer behind her and hides her sledge hammer...
Cera grins and will work real hard to think of one...."Mmmm...are there going to be any cocktail franks served during this?" rubbing her hungry tummy.

Kellamari pokes Riki. We just have Geography, Math, and ... Science? Right?

Jueann chuckles. "Ok What is Moo Etiquette? Why is it important?

Kellamari shivers. Wish I really was in hell, not CT, it'd be a nice bit warmer..
Kyrayna says, "Jueann, would this touch on my craft/job question I asked in page?"

Jueann nods to Kyrayna. "We'll get to that in How to set up your character

Teric grins at Kellamari. "A /bit/? Oh, Moo Etiquette. So that we don't get people mad at us for one, and so that we don't bother small children. Like, permanent damage. IE: stay away from High Reaches. and the Smiths. Yes."

Jueann says, "So any ideas on Basic Etiquette?"

Kellamari says, "Be polite. ;)"

Jueann says, "Be Polite. What else?"

Natali grr's at Teric "Hey, Smith's aren't /that/ bad..." :P
Teric says, "True, not as bad as High Reaches."

Jueann says, "No spamming people "

Cera thinks "Respect of other players"
Lerane says, "Flaming is bad."
Odessa says, "Not @moving into private places."

Jueann says, "Right. What is Flaming?"

Kellamari says, "Not just strolling into people's rooms."

Jueann says, "No power-playing unless you clear it with the person first."

Natali erm's... Don't start unnecessary fights because you don't like 'em...

Teric says, "Oooh, powerplay without permission is a very bad thing." Lerane says, "What exactly is powerplay? I'm very new at this."

Jueann says, "Go in and out of private areas without asking. "What are private areas?"
Cera says, "Peoples rooms :)"
Jueann says, "Power Playing - roleplay or poses that perform actions for or change the state of other players"
Kellamari says, "Someone's room.. like off of the 'Rooms' list."

Jueann nods to Cera. Rooms, whatelse?

Kyrayna says, "Dorms of a craft you don't belong to apply, correct?"
Natali grins... "Staff areas without permission..."
Teric says, "Powerplaying could be like throwing a water baloon at someone and posing that it hit them without asking that person if it would be alright... I think."
Kellamari nods to Teric..

Jueann poses grabbing Teric's arm.

Lerane says, "Oh so pretty much involving a character in your own little schemes."
Teric grins. "Hey now."

Jueann says, "That's power-playing. But if I posed: Jueann makes a grab at Teric's arm. That's not power-playing"

Lerane says, "Okay I got it now. Thanks!"
Kellamari hmms.. What about things like, in some descs people say, "She has a long scar on her right leg, and you wonder how she got it. ... That's powerplaying, right?

Jueann says, "Dorms are private areas. "
Jueann says, "Power-playing in descriptions are allowable. So say the wizzens."

Teric nods. "Then the other person could include that in their own pose, choosing to either have that person connect or miss...."
Cera says, "So Jueann it is okay then to say in your description by that definition You see blah..."

Jueann says, "Ok anything else on power-playing?"
Saisukei thinks it sounds sorta like grammar...direct objects and such...
Jueann nods to Cera. "yeap.

Lerane shivers. Bad memories.
Kellamari says, "What about things in descs like "
Kellamari hates her enter key, really she does..
Cera says, "Like my overly bad description that I havent fixed in four years...bad Cera...."

Cera says, "Oops...*grins* well now we all know...see what happens when you haven't fixed things in a long time :P "
Kellamari says, "What about things in descs like 'before you stands...' I know that's not power playing, but shouldn't it be unencouraged?(is that a word?)"

Jueann chuckles. "Ok back to private areas. Dragon weyrs are private as are dorms and barracks. And below decks of ship. Why?"
Jueann says, "Kellamari, it's allowable."

Cera says, "That is where the 'people' live?"
Rikaeli says, "Cause usually when people just sit around in their rooms it's so they can get away from others and have a moment of quiet for some reason or another."

Jueann nods. "I got into an arguement with a person because she strolled into Jue's livingroom and tried to tell me that Jue's livingroom isn't a private area."

Teric says, "That area belongs to the people who, like Cera said, actually live there. It's not a social area."
Saisukei raises a hand. "you wouldn't just walk into someone's home uninvited. So why would you on pern?"

Jueann says, "Right Saisukei"
Jueann says, "ok what about harrassment? spamming someone just because you like them?"

Rikaeli blinks. Well it's not going to make them like you any better.

Jueann says, "What is spam?"

Cera says, "Hmm does that include globals?..excessive lines of text and somtimes repeatedly used when it isn't wanted?"
Jueann says, "Globals can be used as spam."

Natali grins "Unwanted screen content.. aka, channel spam... etc..."
Cera says, "Though how do you know when you 'offend' someone...alot of people use globals when there friends connect...so is it better to error on the side of not using them?"
Kyrayna says, "There are times where people overly spam the public channel. IMO, you should take it to a seperate channel, so the spam is shared between the people in the convo."

Jueann says, "What about the use of ooc in a public room? That can be spam, kill rp'ing."

Cera says, "Isn't that the truth :)"
Teric nods.

Jueann says, "What is the difference between ic and ooc?"

Kyrayna says, "IC=in character OOC=Out of character :)"
Natali hmm's.. IC is acting as your character, and OOC is as yourself?

Jueann says, "Right. If you are going to go into an ooc conversation, you should go to a channel."
Jueann says, "Anything in Moo etiquette that a new player should know?"

Kellamari nods.. It's rather annoying when people just decide that they're going to have an OOC conversation in, say, a dining room. And then they proceed to tell potential RPers that the room isn't IC right then.
Saisukei gahs! That's a bad one...
Kellamari knows someone on here who tends to do that a /lot/.

Jueann says, "What about pet/fire lizard spam?"

Natali knows people that happen to have OOC conversations in IC format... /that/ really gets annoying... *peers* Pet/firelizard spam can be annoying 'pecially when they're making them RP like landing on your head and stuff... or biting you... aka, powerplaying with the pet.
Cera nods, "Hrm..that is true but I think the bigger one is to try and stay as IC as possible even if it feels silly at first...it will grow on 'em...and gets easier as the more experienced they become...Firelizard Spam is 'really' annoying if there is a room full of people rp'ng then refrain from having your 'pet' speak to another 'pet' while people are trying to rp."
Kyrayna's opinion on pet spam is that you should only do it when it's invited, such as someone perhaps looking at your pet or such... thta's my opinoin though

Jueann says, "ok, does a dog or feline actually speak with human thought? Are they telpathic?"

Teric says, "Nope"
Kellamari nods to Kyra. No, of course not, Jueann.
Natali nopes.
Cera says, "NO...most emphatically...NO"

Jueann says, "I've seen people do that on this game."

Kellamari does tend to have her runner stomp a foot or whinny when someone enters the Stalls area of the Stables.. is that considered Pet spam?
Kyrayna says, "nope, but they can appear to have a feeling. Like "Feline looks at you with worried eyes.""
Saisukei groans. Only in Disney movies, and summer of sam do dogs and cats speak... Kyrayna wavies at Jesk.

Jueann nods. If you are going to do pet spam or fire lizard spam, ask first. I am one that really doesn't like to rp with pets or fire lizards
Jueann says, "So what is the most basic of etiquette here?"
Jesk smiles, "If used correctly though FL's can add to the quality of the RP.. But if used sparingly.."

Kellamari says, "Even if it's like, an animal-place, like a stable? And if they aren't busy in RP already?"

Jueann says, "Kellamari, If it's appropriate place for pet spam, why not?"

Cera chuckles, "I have rp'd animals...like controlling a runner when someone else is riding it...quite fun...but I think that is different circumstances then have a series of ten flits dominating the rp."
Kellamari nods to Jue and Cera.

Jesk nods in agreement with Cera, "Like I said.. Moderation is the key. *grins*
Jueann returns to her question. "so What is the most basic of moo etiquette, then?

Kyrayna says, "Don't spam"
Cera hmm's and stills goes back to the respect of other players rights as well as your own...
Natali hmm's... respect others as you want to be respected?
Kellamari agrees with Cera.

Jueann says, "Be polite. Courtesy above all things."

Rikaeli does too.

Jueann says, "Have I missed anything in this topic? Everyone's questions have been answered?"
Jueann says, "Comments? Before I move on?"

Kyrayna shakes her head. "Not at this time, not for me." :)

Jueann says, "no prob."
Jueann says, "Anyone?"

Kyrayna says, "People should find a home, IMO."
Kellamari says, "People should figure out a background for their character, and try to find some family if they want."

Jesk hmms, "Take your time.. Look around.. Find something you're gonna want to stick with.. There's nothing I dislike seeing more than people bouncing from one craft to the other..
Jueann says, "Amen! or moo hopping from area to area. "
Jesk nods to Jueann, "Exactly.. ;)

Jueann says, "The one thing I don't like is seeing a 7 turn old Ista fosterling, rp'ing in Keroon."

Kyrayna says, "it's good to get a feel of where everything is"

Jueann says, "As a traveler you are given alot of leeway because you are a traveler."
Jesk nods to Kyrayna, "And have an idea of what the craft's about before you join it.. Actually read the craft's help files..

Kellamari nods and chuckles.. I actually got someone from 'Reaches hoppin down to Paradise to RP. When I asked them ICly how they'd gotten here, they said, "Well I was up there and then poof I was here" or something to that extent.

Jueann shudders at Kellamari
Jesk nods, "I've had similar things happen.. And I've had to drag my Guards and Herders back from HRW 'fore..

Natali is reminded of a few days ago where my puppet saw a couple'a newbies Rping at Emerald beach, and then they were RPing that they were going to take a stroll to High Reaches Weyr. X.x.

Jueann says, "The distance between areas should be considered ic. Traveling is very restriced on Pern. Runner, ship or dragon. And dragons aren't taxis. Usually only people of rank are allowed to be ferried that way."
Jesk grins at Nata, "I was watching that one too!
Jueann says, "You should consider how you got there. And how long have you've been gone. Also, those of you with children alts. Children on Pern are very very protected. And seeing a child from Ista at Gar alone is very un ic."

Saisukei was once taken by dragon, after being asked however. Invitation before asking a lift from a dragon, is advised. 0_0

Jueann says, "What the age of your character, alot of crafts won't take anyone under 12 or over 20. "

Kellamari wonders.. Am I allowed to ask that someone go over the MOO turorial again before I let them join the Hold? I know crafts do interviews, but since Holds generally don't..

Jueann says, "asking a person to read the helpfiles is a good thing. I still read them."

[Hell] Linora /lives/ in the helpfiles. Practically. I didn't RP for the first whole week, I think.

Jueann says, "Weapons and angst. Are they allowable?"

Odessa says, "If everyone in the RP says yes."

Jueann says, "The smiths do make them. But swords aren't very ic. All the good metals are being used for the defense of Pern. There is only so much to go around."

Natali um's... well, under special consideration... if it's IC enough... and all parties agree... for angst anyway... but for weapons... well, most people don't have special training... so that's generally not a good thing to get into.
Kellamari says, "Only when appropriate. At something like a Turnday, someone shouldn't suddenly go around telling everyone about how their parents died by being murdered with the rest of their Cothold, and they were the only survivor, and were orphaned, yadayadayada"
Kyrayna says, "Jueann, what do we do when we have a character over 20? Is there anything they can do round hold or Weyr?"
Odessa says, "Or during a hatching, did that once without emaing to, blah."

[Hell] Lothar nods to Kyrayna, "Sure is.. I started Virgil at 40, he was a Steward for a while untill I idled out..

Kellamari says, "And also, Turnday's for average Hold residents and craft appie aren't very IC, are they? Aren't Turndays generally only really celebrated for people of rank?"
Kellamari says, "And it's much more IC to have a person over 20 being the Steward or Headwoman, rather than some 16 turn old."
[Hell] Lothar nods to Kyrayna, "Sure is.. I started Virgil at 40, he was a Steward for a while untill I idled out..

Jueann says, "yes Kyrayna, There's alot of jobs around the weyr or hold. From drudge work to everyday living. Keeping the weyr or hold, green free, cleaning, mending, helping the people of rank or crafters"
[Hell] Lothar smiles at the talk of Turndays, "I kinda agree with Alex on this score.. They might not be Cannon with Anne's books.. But they are IC.. There's many little things like that we do around here that's not Cannon exactly..

Kellamari shouldn't be talking, of course, since she was Stablemaster at 16... ;)
Kyrayna has asked holds and weyr's if they needed help. I always recieve a no, not right now. If that's the case, what do I do?

Jueann says, "I will mention that @party is for moo-wide events and shouldn't be abused. Turn day parties are fine but lately it's been abused."

[Hell] Tamisha says, "but to have a tillek dolphin appies turnday at gar and have a bunch of people jump from all over pern to go to the turnday? [Notes some area's will have a prob with you jumping and numerous people have gotten into trouble for jumping without asking or anything specially when they've been told not to]."
[Hell] Lothar hmms, "Get yourself a residence somewhere then.. You can always find something to do later..
Kellamari says, "Join a Hold or Weyr, and then just ask to fill a totally IC position, like stablehand. It's just for RP, you don't get any OOC privelages.."

Jueann says, "You can do your job off camera. And be a resident on. You can complain about cleaning out blah blah, and wasn't the Steward being a bit hard nose about blah..."
Jueann says, "What is on camera and off camera?"

Linora says, "On camera is stuff that's actually RPd."

[Hell] Lothar hmms, "On Camera is RP'd stuff.. Off Camera is stuff that's /understood/ to happen..
Kellamari says, "On camera is what you RP out, and then off camera is just what is expected would be happening ICly.. like chores, not everyone RPs them."
Linora says, "Although they can be fun to RP at times. Better than hanging around sipping klah."

Jueann says, "Right. So anythng I'm missing?"

Jueann says, "In setting up your character, and you want to join an area, what should you do?"
[Hell] Lothar says, "READ HELP FILE!"
[Hell] Lothar grins and notes that's one of his pet-peevs...
Jueann chuckles. "That's important, what else?
[Hell] Lothar hmmms, "Ask around about it.. I re-itterate, Make sure it's something you really want to do.."

Linora says, "RP there for a while?"

[Hell] Lothar nods to Linora, "Bingo."

Kellamari says, "Perhaps visit the place and RP as if your parent/guardian was actually bringing you to get you checked out as an apprentice."
Linora beams.
Jueann nods to Linora.

Kyrayna says, "page an actual staff member... not a resident lol"
Linora shrugs. "Some residents can be helpful... you can usually tell by the RP."

[Hell] Lothar just grins pondering the fact that some resies know more than the staffers?
[Hell] Lothar nods to Linora, "Yea.. If they actually RP often then they're not a Staffer.. *winks*

Rikaeli has helped out newbies at Gar many times. I'm usually one of the first people they run into. And I'm not a staffy.
Kyrayna says, "true, but I mean to actually gain residency. Don't ask a resident to add you (unless it's just an alt)"

Jueann says, "And bugging a guide because a staffer isn't answering their pages or mail, isn't the answer. I've actually have people paging me because they can't get into an area as a crafter/resident"
Linora eyes Lothar... "Really? Half of HRW seems to be staff. And I think Gar actually has an RP-with-staff requirement." Nods to Kyrayna, "Oh, yes. It'd have to be staff to add you as a resident."
[Hell] Lothar nods to Jueann, "You're not the only one..

Rikaeli nods. It does.
Kellamari nods to Linora.. "I think all the 'riders are staff?"

Jueann says, "I made be staff in one or two areas and a x1 of one, that doesn't mean I am a staffer for everywhere."
[Hell] Lothar grins at Linora, "I'm at both HRW and Gar, I know what you mean.. :)

Jueann says, "no Kellamari. I have a rider alt and not staff"

Kyrayna says, "if anything mail the staffer to ask to add you. You don't have to be present on the moo to be added do you?"
Linora winks at Lothar. Me too.

Kellamari oooh's. In one of the weyr helpfiles, it says to page any of the listed staff, or any riders? Or at least it used to?

Jueann says, "No Kyrayna. They'll add you as soon as they see the mail" Kyrayna says, "that's what I thought :)"

Jueann says, "Riders can help by asking on channel."

Kellamari ah's, and doesn't have anyone at a weyr right now, so wouldn't know. :)

[Hell] Lothar nods to Kyrayna, "Expecially if you wanna be a resident of the hold.. Just @send the appropriate staff mailer.. I don't know how many people I add to Ista that way..

Kellamari is getting so bored with multiplying matrices.. >.<
[Hell] Lothar grins at Kellamari, "I've only got 10 alts.. :)~

Jueann says, "Usually if I get paged about joining an area. I'll usually check @allstaff to see who's on in that area and pass the buck"

Kellamari really only has 12, but found one of her alts from a while ago that she didn't know was set no-reap, and brought him back.. he's still a traveler, though.

Jueann thinks people shouldn't have more alts then they can manage as it over loads the database

Linora doesn't have more than she can manage. Just enough.
