Jueann says, "Any questions before we get started?"
Lothar shakes his head, "None here..."
Faeren shakes his head. "Nope."
Jueann says, "Any questions?"
The daemon speaks in Natch's voice, "Why should anyone want to set con and dis con messages and what are they>"
Kortin wows...the demon & natch...hmmm...never woulda thought...*sorry, just had to*
The daemon speaks in Jueann's voice, "we'll get to that when the lesson starts in 10 mins. I want to get any random questions out of the way"
In a caricature of Natch, the daemon glowers at Kortin.
Kortin pokes the wannabe Natch...nope, not cuddly enough...
Faeren twidles his thumbs.
Sahri bites her lip. "Uh... does anyone mind if I just sit back and listen?"
Annabelle mews.
Kortin shakes his head..."Guides: What ever will we do with them?"
Jueann says, "Everyone's welcome"
Kortin grins.
Aziza smiles.
Jueann raises an eyebrow at Kortin. "I have one hard and fast rule. I encourage comments and questions on the topic at hand. But all I ask is keep the unnecessary spam down. It's distracting. Alright?"
Kortin noddles and quits joking around :)
Sahri nods. "Gotcha. Uh, just before you start, is there such a thing as player-flits?"
The daemon speaks in Shirgall's voice, "No player firelizards."
Jueann says, "Sahri, no."
Jueann says, "Ok, Disconnect and connect messages, You've seen them. What are they?"
Milada decides to pop in. She's not new, but she's not doing anything, so why not? :)
Lothar faints as Shirgall speaks...
Jueann says, "Anyone?"
Sahri thinks... and puts her hand up.
Faeren smiles. "When you firsyt connect, there's a message sent to people in the room , same as when you disconnect.
Sahri nods and adds... "And also to any channels you're on, too."
Jueann says, "You can do the same on the area channel, like a craft channel that you've connected. They are fun and can be personalable. But are they practical?"
Iyana says, "Not really. Sure it gives an individualistic entrance/exit. But other than that is serves no purpose."
Jueann says, "Anyone? Why do people like them?"
July waves. "Okay... what's up?"
Lightning flashes in hell, and July makes a belated dramatic entrance.
Jueann says, "hi July, this is a new player lesson, feel free to join in."
Sartorius thinks it's fun sometimes to read them...
Faeren picks up Annabelle.
Daneel shruggs "People like spam, or they like to express their personal feelings."
July says, "Ah. I figured as much"
Milada thinks people just want to be... different. To distinguish themselves. And a weird message is infinitely easier than becoming a better and more unique RPer. ;)
Sahri wonders... "Well... it sort of depends, doesn't it?" she asks. "Well... they can make your waking up more IC... but for channels, they really serve no purpose, 'cept to mannounce yourself."
July says, "I take it the topic is messages when you connect?"
Milada points out that often, you /aren't/ really waking up. Who really sleeps in the Flying Mug? Or maybe you're in the middle of RP and just having to reboot, or whatever.
Sahri notes that it makes being rebooted more IC... or something like that.
Jueann says, "Right. They are ooc bit of fluff that serves no purpose other then drawing attention to one's self. But when can they be annoying?"
July shrugs. "Sometimes people do use waking up as RP bits.."
July says, "Or falling asleep all of a sudden"
Sahri raises her hand. "When tehy are really spammy, and you're trying to rp."
Milada says, "Sahri, only if you're narcoleptic. ;) Okay, yes, I know a lot of people have messages with them just having their attention drift, or something."
The daemon speaks in Shirgall's voice, "They're typically annoying when they're used. ;)"
Milada thinks the sleep-ones and so on, during RP are minorly irritating, but the really OOC ones are just bad, bad, awful. Luckily, I've seen none of those since coming back, but I can recall, once upon a time, people vanishing in bursts of glitter, flying off, etc...
Jueann says, "Persoanlly, I think anything over 2 and a half lines is too long. Its distracting and annoying"
Jueann says, "Setting them? Anyone know how?"
Semele says, "Semele hmms, "i just got back from doing something real quick amd I looked at all you guys wrote and I don't really understand this?""
Sahri says, "@odisconnect/oconnect me is?"
Milada believes they're in the @messages. @ch_connect and @ch_disconnect, and what Sahri said. :)
Jueann says, "Everyone can look at their @messages"
Sahri wows... spammy.
Jueann nods to Milada. "Right. The command is: @ch_connect me is
July oooohs.
Jueann says, "Any questions so far? Comments?"
Semele grins, Be right back y'all I have to go do something in RL. :)
Jueann says, "If not, @party"
Jueann says, "What is @party?"
Sahri leans back. Ahhh... she yawns, then drifts off to sleep. hmm you hear her sigh gently in her sleep. She's prob'ly dreaming of someone special...
July says, "It's like the little message on the Harper's Tale Answering Machine"
Milada chuckles. "It tells people about big things going on at the moment, and where they're taking place."
Jueann says, "Actually, its a quick announcement that flashes through out the whole game. It is to be used to announce happenings."
Jueann says, "What should @party not be used for?"
In a caricature of Lothar, the daemon hmms, "Things that wouldn't concern the whole MOO, or large portions of the people on...?
Milada always thought it was kind of irritating when people would post their birthdays, or that their cat had just had kittens, or little personally-interesting but trivial things like that. :)
Jueann says, "Player birthdays, anniversaries, etc. OOC stuff. When else?"
Semele says, It shouldn't be used for regular talk.....
July says, "Non-announcementy stuff"
Milada admits that she liked being paged by every single person on the MOO for her fifteenth birthday, but I think the game is too big for that, now. :)
Jueann says, "Its fun to announce improntu parties, role-playing but not all the time. People can see role-playing going on by using the crowds"
Semele hmms, your intrests on something?
Jueann says, "I logged on once to the same person 3 day running using @party for a dart tournament in the Mug."
Jueann says, "A bit much?"
July says, "Crowds?"
Jueann says, "Fighting over the @party has happened. its a good way to have the guides and leaders stepping in."
Jueann says, "July? type: crowds"
Milada says, "If there's already a party set, the polite thing, I think, is to re-set it but put the former message in first, and then yours. So, if the first thing had said, 'Party at Ista Hold!', then you would set it to, 'Party at Ista Hold! -- There's also a firelizard hatching going on at Keroon!' or something like that."
Sartorius has seen that happen before. July says, "Yeah...... does Crowds report where the most people are?"
Jueann says, "The first thing before resetting is to ask if the person is still using it. If that person that set it isn't on, then its a good bet they are done. Then you can reset it."
Sartorius thought crowds reported groups of 3 or more people? So yes.
Jueann says, "Then if the person is still using it, then put their @party first, then your's. But let's be reasonable. I came on once to a 5 line @party"
Jueann says, "The rule of thumb should be use it for an hour, then reset it"
July says, "How do you read old @nn messages?"
Jueann says, "But remember always page the person who is using it. Hogging the @party is a good way to get the guides noticing you and it taken away from you"
Jueann says, "July, I'll get to that later."
Jueann says, "Any questions so far? "
Sahri rejoins the conversation. "Uh, with the @party, should you always include the last @party as well as yours? Unless it's check @who..."
Jueann nods to Sahri. "Include it, if its still going on. But always page the person who is using it and check. Once I reset the party without checking, adding a gathering that was still going on and later found out that the area leader hadn't sanctioned it. He was pretty upset over it.
Jueann says, "Anything else?"
Sahri shakes her head.
Jueann smiles at Sahri.
July shakes her head.
Andjara mews a big no.
July says, "Because we hadn't decided where we live.."
Milada clears her throat. "Shirgy is predjudiced against poor, helpless Holdless people like Aramina and her family... er, no. Because newbies playing Holdless is Not a Good Thing."
July says, "And have no political affiliations"
Sahri puts her hand up. "Is it because you weren't holdless... just hadn't set a hold/craft/weyr affiliation yet?"
Milada says, "They're hard to do properly, and there /is/ a stigma to it during Fall, so instead you're just travellers who had a home somewhere and are just looking for a new one. Which is okie-dokie on Pern. ;)"
Sartorius though it would be because they'd die in fall? Or something like that?
Semele drifts off into the world with comfy pillows and a comfy bed. She falls into a dreamless sleep, before she fell asleep she whispered "Thanks y'all, and give a hug to Cipri and Lyana for me"
July says, "ICly, does anything happen if you stay outside during threadfall if you're disconnected?"
Jueann says, "new players are called Travelers for a good reason. They are new and need a home. They aren't holdless. They just are going from one hold to another. And as should should have a background history as to why they are at Ista or High Reaches or at Keroon or Tillek"
In a caricature of Lothar, the daemon shakes his Head to July..
Jueann says, "July, on the game nothing. But ic, you are dead"
Milada says, "If you're disconnected, you /could/ be assumed to be inside."
Milada says, "Just like when you're disconnected, you could be assumed to be doing chores, or sleeping, or anything else. :)"
Jueann says, "July, if you discon outside, most rooms have a housekeeper verb that'll send you back to your home"
Jueann says, "We just dont' have an area for holdless people. "
Dawine sits down at one of the chairs.
Marlin sits down, looking around.
Jueann says, "When you go for a craft or hold interview, its best that you have a good background story instead of saying you are a traveler or holdless."
July says, "Sorry... got disconnected"
Jueann says, "July, if you discon outside, most rooms have a housekeeper verb that'll send you back to your home"
July says, "What'd I miss?"
July says, "Okay.. thanks."
Daneel always tries to have a place he came from and a reason he is looking into living at or applying to the location he is visiting, prefferably not just Running Away from someplace else.
The daemon speaks in Shirgall's voice, "The main reason to avoid playing holdless is that the areas are struggling hard enough to have people that are interesting in playing the positive side of Pern, and outcast, holdless people who are indigent or criminal just doesn't really help us that much. Sure, it might be fun for someone to play, but it's not fun for everyone else to have to put up with it."
July says, "Ah... happy Pernese. Got it"
The daemon speaks in Shirgall's voice, "Relatively happy. I see the people who volunteer to play guards get stressed out enough with regular people, let alone having to deal with the holdless."
In a caricature of Lothar, the daemon nods...
Sartorius grins.
Milada prefers playing the realist side of Pern. But I don't think, whatever you start out as, it really matters; after all, you may start at a Traveller, but you could still play someone who'd lived at that Hold for their whole life, and so on.
Jueann nods. Ask Dee sometime, her feelings on stress
July says, "Well.. it must be hard to play Holdless as a newbie anyway, so I don't think it's really an issue."
In a caricature of Shirgall, the daemon nods. Traveler was the best thing we could do to let people look around before settling on a place.
Milada doesn't think most Holdless /are/ criminal or anything like that, but anyway. Yes. It's not a thing newbies would be much good at, I think. It's more complex than anything else on Pern, I'd say.
Milada says, "Read Renegades. Being Holdless is certainly not simple. ;)"
Marlin nods and watches/listens.
The daemon speaks in Shirgall's voice, "That's an interesting opinoin, Milada, but the lesson is about what *is* acceptable, not about what *should* be."
July says, "I did... I didn't like that book too much though. IMHO, it spanned too many years. "
Jueann says, "These lessons are to help new players in dealing with issues, etiquette. Confusing new players with heated issues isn't helping them."
Jueann says, "Critizing policy in an new player lesson also doesn't help and it disrupts them. If you have an issue about anything, take it to the wizzens or *discussion"
Jueann says, "Not here. I volunteer my time and effort to help people."
July whistles innocently. "Who's criticizing policy?"
Milada isn't criticizing policy in the least. She's agreeing that the role is not one that newbies should be playing, and so it makes sense. *shrugs*
Jueann says, "So help teach, please."
Esste bounces in with pomp, glitter, and assorted other things.. what've I missed?
July gets RPers block quite often.
Jueann says, "We give all new players and alts the title of traveler because it's easiest on everyone. But its up to the traveler to have the background story"
Sartorius waves! Have fun! I've gotta jet...:)
Jueann says, "Any questions? We have 5 mins left?"
July says, "Yeah... what happens if you get RPer's Block?"
In a caricature of Niyanne, the daemon looks impish and suggests a hachet to deal with it, July. ;)
Jueann says, "The best way to break block, is to go out and do"
Nothing happens.
Esste /snorts/ at Niyanne.
In a caricature of Lothar, the daemon agrees..
July says, "Oh."
Milada says, "Ask other people. Brainstorm! Look on the web... there are always ideas there..."
Dawine sits down on one of the chairs
Milada doesn't mean just at Pern sites, either. Read peoples' web fiction. RP logs from Star Wars games. Information on medeival life. Whatever you can find. :)
July bows with a flourish, even if it isn't IC.
Jueann says, "Well on the game, go out and find rp'ing or sit in your room and chat on the channels. you have a choice."
Jueann says, "Anything else?"
July shakes her head.
In a caricature of Lothar, the daemon shakes his head....
