Norway has many famous artists. One of these is Henrik Ibsen. Henrik
Ibsen did realistic plays of the 1800’s, which brought him fame as the Father
of Drama.
A strong influence on the art style of the early 1990’s was the Norwegian
painter Edvard Munch. He was his country’s greatest artist. His paintings
often had themes like misery, sickness and death. The Cry is his most
familiar painting.
Gustav Vigeland made the famous statues which stand in Oslo’s Frogner
Park. This park contains 192 full sized sculptures which contain more than
600 figures. These are all displayed in full size. Vigeland always worked
alone and he created sculptures for the park until his death in 1943. Some of
his more famous sculptures are the Monolith, the Monolith Plateau, the
Fountain and the Wheel of Life.
Bjornstjerne Bjornson, Knut Hamsun and Sigrid Undset all have two
things in common. They are all Norwegian authors, and they have all won
the Nobel Prize for literature.
Last, but not least, Norway’s best known composer is Edvard Greig.
Edvard Greig became famous for his new piano pieces that he created for
young amateurs all over the world to play in their homes.
Economic Pattern
Norway is one of the wealthiest nations in the world. This is mostly due
to the development of inexpensive hydroelectric power. Located in Eidfjord
is one of Norway’s largest hydroelectric power plants.
Norway is a non-industrial culture, meaning that the majority of the
population lives in rural areas and the people produce their own food,
clothes, and build their own houses. Because of its lack of machines,
Norway relies heavily on timber, farming and crops, sheep farming and
other livestock production. Natural resources include oil and gas, iron ore,
pyrite, ilmenite, lead, molybdenite, zinc and some coal.
Norway’s currency is the Krone. $100.00 Canadian dollars are equal to
$535.18 Norwegian krones.
Norway also owns a fishing fleet. Norways fishing fleet is among the
world's largest and most efficient.
Environment (part of Economic)
Three main land regions make up Norway: the Mountainous plateau, the
South-eastern lowlands and the Trondheim lowlands. The lowlands are
densely populated and hold all of the country’s farming areas.
The narrow northern part of Norway is bordered by the Kjolen
Mountains. Norway’s other two mountain ranges, located in the south, are
the Dovre Mountains and the Long Mountains. The Long Mountains are
home to the tallest mountain in Norway, Galdhopiggin, and also the largest
highland plain, the Hardanger plateau.
Glaciers formed many of the lakes and deep valleys of Norway. There are
also many rivers in Norway. Some of these are Glama, Lagen and Otra.
Norway’s climate is pretty nice. The winters are fairly mild despite that it
is located so far north. In Oslo the average annual temperature range is
between – 4 degrees Celsius and 17 degrees Celsius.
Norway has a very jagged coastline with hundreds of fjords and
peninsulas. This coastline is 13,267 miles, half the distance of the equator.
The coastline is also fringed by many islands and skerries ( rocky reefs).
Sogne Fiord is Norway’s longest Fjord.
Religious Pattern
Norway’s religion is Evangelical Lutheran ( 88%). Even though most
people say they are religious, Norway has an extremely low attendance for
Sunday Mass. The country has a very relaxed attitude about religion, but
60% of the people say they believe in God.
The information from a new study says that one in ten Norwegians say
They are not religious, while most say they are only a little bit so. This
makes Norwegians the least religious in Europe.
