Rivers

Introduction

I am Izzie, I am 13 and go to Newstead Woods School For Girls. I am in Year 8 and have been asked to produce a web page to give YOU information on a topic of my choice which I have studied in Geography this year. I have chosen the subject if Rivers. Rivers may not seem a very interesting thing to you, and they weren't to me at first either, but they are, if you just look a little bit closer...

The Basics

Here is just a little bit about rivers just in case you didn't know that much! Rivers are amazing things. They start of as little streams, but soon become huge areas of water covering a vast land mass. They all flow to the sea, and provide a lot of the worlds water supplies. Some rivers can be very still.

While others can be very lively, with rough rapids, great to go rafting down!

The Life of a River

A river starts as a small stream, normally. This is called the source of the river. It does not contain much water at this early stage. Slowly this river will get bigger and bigger, as more streams join it. The streams that join it are called Tributary's. At the point when they join, this part of the river is called the Confluence. As it carries on, the river will get larger until it reaches it's maximum. It will also create waterfalls and will slowly erode the land around it. The river will also turn corners. Here some of the water will get thrown to one side as the current turns. This is called an Estuary. Every river has a flood plain. This is where the water will flow if for some reason a river has too much water in it. A river also has a drainage basin, an area of land which catches water from the surroundings and takes it to the river. The river will flow for a long time in the direction of the sea. When it finally does reach the sea, it breaks apart. This is called the mouth of the river.

Here is a poem I wrote about water

Water, A Source of Life

It hadn't rained for months

Maybe even years

The sun had burnt us

Killed us

I was sitting in a tree

Looking up to the sky

When suddenly I felt a drop on my nose

DRIP, DROP, DRIP, DROP

I ran inside, and went to my window

And watched it fall

Pitter patter on the glass

Pitter patter on my face

Running around

In the glorious rain

The glorious rain

It had finally come.

After a while I got worried

It rained, and rained

AND RAINED

It NEVER stopped

It had rained for months

Maybe even years

The rain had drowned us

KILLED US!

I hope you like my poem, it shows both bad sides and good sides of water and I am very proud of it.

Rivers around the world

There are many rivers all over the world. Some of the well known ones are the Amazon, The Nile, The Thames and the Rhine. The Amazon is the longest river in the world.

A River Study

I went on a trip to the Isle of Wight with my school. We went for a week, and we spent a whole day doing a study of the River Medina. This is the main River in the Isle of Wight. I runs right through the middle of the island, hence the name (Medina means Middle in Old Saxon Tongue). We had to take the ph level and oxygen level of the water. We also measured how fast the water was flowing.

This is a picture of the River Medina. This is probably the Middle Area of the river, closer to the Mouth rather than the source. It looks as if it is flowing quite fast but also looks very shallow.
