** Hui Ohana Council is a non-profit organization that offers empowerment to consumers of mental health services.
** Our immediate goal is to mainstream consumers out of the institutions and back into the community.
** Our long-term goal is to build an activity drop-in center for consumers, volunteers and professionals.
** We are always busy with fundraising, carefully detailed grant-writing, Hui Ohana membership drives.
** A featured program we offer within Hui Ohana Council is the world reknown Compeer program. Maui is currently the only Hawaiian island offering this valuable resource to its consumers. It matches consumers of mental health against specially trained Compeer volunteers holding similar interests and backgrounds, for ease of transition from the client's trauma back into a normal lifestyle and routine. A volunteer's job is to be there for his client, to be a listening ear, escort his client to social functions and act as a safe friend. Compeer volunteers typically give one day per month of their time and energy to the cause.
