Les Comanches et les Kiowas Ce sont les mal aimés des Plaines du Sud. Ils ont une fâcheuse réputation de pillards, d'enleveurs d'enfants et de tueurs.
Le chef-d'oeuvre de John FORD "The Searchers" (1956), inspiré du roman d'Alan LE MAY lui-même fondé sur un fait réel, montre l'inlassable recherche d'une petite fille par Ethan Edwards (John WAYNE) et son neveu d'adoption Martin (Jeffrey HUNTER), laquelle dure une dizaine d'années. Certains westerns les confondent toutefois avec les "Comancheros" qui sont en réalité des bandits blancs et mexicains qui trafiquent avec les bandes comanches et leur achètent les produits de leurs raids. La carte ci-dessous montrent les "cessions" successives de territoire, dans des proportions correspondant au sort de tous les groupes indiens jusqu'à la fin du XIXè siècle.
