The COWHAMs are originally a Lincolnshire family but it is only in the 1750s that I pick up my Cowhams in Hull, when JOHN COWHAM(born around 1730) married MARY PARKER. Whether John was born in Hull or Lincolnshire, I have no idea. They married in 1752 in Holy Trinity Hull and went on to have at least three sons, ROBERT, THOMAS & JOHN. There was possibly a daughter JANE from an earlier marriage to a Jane Cuthbert and this daughter Jane married a William Parker (possibly a relation of her stepmother ?) in 1775.
Of the sons, ROBERT, born 1754, JOHN born 1761 and THOMAS COWHAM, b. 1760

JOHN COWHAM married ELEANOR WELLS and they had at least two children, Eleanor (1785) and JAMES MURRAY COWHAM
James Murray married Rebecca Foster and had a son called James Murray. He then went to London and married a Sarah Elizabeth Hoggett and in his turn, had a son James Murray Cowham in 1835 though what happened to him is not known.

THOMAS COWHAM’s wife is unknown but she did provide him with four children, three girls (Mary 1779, Sally 1785 and Sarah 1783) and a son THOMAS born 1784.
This Thomas married ANN CADE on January 8, 1806 in Holy Trinity, Kingston Upon Hull, and they set about producing three girls and one boy. The boy was called Thomas (1807) the girls were Sarah, Elizabeth, and Ann, all born between 1810 and 1814. Ann married in 1834 to a Michael Hebblewhite.
There are also indications that there were two other children Frances and Edward who were born in 1832 and 1823 respectively. Whilst it is possible that Thomas and Ann could well have been having children right up to 1832, it is unlikely and it is more likely that they were of a later marriage.

The eldest of John and Mary’s children wasROBERT and he married FRANCES CURTIS again in Holy Trinity, Hull in on May 13th 1778.

They had at least 9 children, born in either Drypool and Sculcoates.
ROBERT CURTIS COWHAM was the easiest to identify because of his name and he was born June 18, 1783, in Drypool, Kingston on Hull.
MARY ANN COWHAM was born in 1781 but she likely died before 1789 as another MARY was christened on June 15 1789 in Sculcoates.
Then there was SARAH( b. 1786), ANN COWHAM, ( b1788) and JOHN (b. 1791) all in Sculcoates, Hull.
MARGARET COWHAM was the fifth child and was christened on October 24, 1792 with ELIZABETH(1794) and finally WILLIAM PARKER COWHAM in 1795.

MARGARET COWHAMwas my 4 times great grandmother and she married THOMAS DOBSON December 1818 in Holy Trinity Church, Kingston on Hull.
Thomas was a joiner and the family moved to Whitby sometime around the early 1820s where their three sons were born. As their marriage was in 1818 and their first recorded child was born in 1823, there were likely to have more and perhaps they would have been born in Hull. Unfortunately looking for Dobsons in somewhere the size of Hull is a bit like looking for the proverbial needle in a haystack.
