How Can You Help?

Produce Sorting: Volunteers are needed to sort produce at the Regional Market in Hartford, Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm and Saturday from 8:00 to 12:00pm. Opportunities at this facility will exist throughout the year. Volunteers are also needed to pick produce at local farms during the months of July through October- this is a great group activity!

Administrative Support: Volunteers are need on an on-call basis. Primary tasks often involve answering phones, data entry, help with bulk mailings, filing, and follow up phone calls.

Short-term Office Projects and Research: Do you have a special skill or talent? Foodshare frequently has short-term projects that we need the help of independent thinkers for. Ask about projects we have in mind or make suggestions that you think would benefit Foodshare. Past or possible opportunities include: serving as volunteer librarian, researching educational tools & hunger facts, creating games to teach the Food Pyramid, writing columns for our newsletter, being resident artist, putting together a recipe booklet, or assisting our Spirit Committee.

Fundraising activities include actively seeking in-kind services for event-related expenses, and sharing input regarding progress and planning of entertainment, food and beverage, marketing and public relations with Event Staff. Team captains are also needed to organize teams of walkers from their work, school, social clubs or place of worship, to participate in the Walk Against Hunger each May.

Warehouse: opportunities include assisting in loading food on and off trucks, organizing donations on the warehouse floor, sorting orders, or performing light maintenance duties. Volunteers are needed Monday-Friday from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm.

Reclamation: Volunteers are needed to inspect and evaluate damaged cans and packages of nonperishable food products, and to sort and redistribute these donations to the warehouse shopping area. A 2-hour training session is required to teach volunteers how to determine which products are safe for consumption. Due to the training involved, Foodshare asks that volunteers make a weekly commitment for a minimum of 6 months.

Special Events include promotions, concerts, receptions, and issue specific events such as The Walk Against Hunger, Empty Bowls, Thanksgiving Food & Fund Drives, and the NALC Food Drive and other local events. These events occur throughout the year. We need volunteers to help during events to greet attendees, register participants, and take donations; volunteers also needed to represent Foodshare at community functions such as volunteer fairs, food shows, and Expo events.

Speaker’s Bureau/Foodshare Ambassadors members are trained to educate the community about Foodshare’s mission to end hunger in Greater Hartford and how they can help. Volunteers make presentations to community organizations, school and congregations throughout the year, or they can assist us by answering questions at food drives and volunteer fairs. All potential volunteers are required to attend a training session.

Professional Skills are also needed and welcome at Foodshare, especially in the fields of photography, graphic design, consulting/training, and printing.
