This is home to our rats. It consists of 3 different birdcages. These cages have a tray on the bottom that makes it extremely easy to keep clean.
Rats can be kept in a vast assortment of cages. I prefer to use the birdcages instead of aquariums because the aquarium doesn’t have the airflow a wire cage has. Without proper airflow, respiratory infections can flourish.
This home uses three different cages all connected into one. I’ve used Plexiglas as a floor for upper units, using the perches as the base for each floor.
The rats decide where their “kitchen”, “Litter box” and Play areas will be. Every base contains
Aspen Shavings. Cedar shavings and Alpine Shavings can cause upper respiratory problems! Never use Cedar or Alpine Shavings!
