CHAPTER ONE
Shoving aside the remainder of his dinner, Ryan Garrett gave up the pretense of eating, and glanced with annoyance at the crowd of people gathered around him.
What was he doing here?
Well, actually that was a rhetorical question; Ryan knew what he was doing here. His long time friend Brad Harper was getting married in a few months and as Brad’s best man it was Ryan’s duty to attend the engagement party. But in his current state of mind, he found himself unable to appreciate the celebration.
Arranging his features in what he hoped was neutral expression; he mentally took note of the people in attendance. He had expected to see a number of well-connected newspaper people as both he and Brad worked in that field, and there were the usual number of obligatory high school and college friends.
Brad’s parents had retired to Texas a few years ago and regretfully had been unable to attend. Brad’s only other close relative was a younger sister, Jenna.
With that thought Ryan’s eyes were drawn to Jenna. Seated on top of a picnic table, she had one slim leg crossed over the other. Her daringly short, olive-green skirt displayed her trim legs to an advantage, and her white silk blouse clung gracefully to her slender curves.
