If Her Heart is Broken, We All Shall Die

"now there is simply one less heart to break"

Looking out her window, Kathryn realizes it isn't the
most perfect day for going out, but it can't wait any
longer. She looks down at her hands. She must
remember what had happened that day. She rushes out of
her room and down the hallway.
§
After closing the front door and starting off slow,
Kathryn's pace becomes quicker and she finds
herself running toward the empty lot. First, she
runs past her ex-best friend's house.
She stops for a moment. Alyssa
was another good friend she had lost this year.
Actually, she really didn't have many friends anymore;
mainly because they couldn't handle her
depression. She has a brief moment of thought,
then realizes she should get there before it's too dark.
Walking slowly again, it finally comes into view.
§
The mountain; it is more beautiful than she
remembers. But she would remember today.
She can't see the trail that leads to the top, so
she begins to run through the large bushes as
quickly as she can. They are well above her head and
their large branches start clawing at her, pulling
her back, making it harder to move. She gets
tangled in the wild thorns, but won't give up now,
not since she has come so far. A sudden gust of wind
hits her. It may be a warning, but she persists,
wanting to know the truth.
§
Finally, Kathryn reaches the top, out of breath. She
sees the spot where they sat that day, and
slowly makes her way toward it. Running her hands
across where he had been, she hopes some of him
is still there. Kathryn looks up at the view from her
elevation as a chill wind starts to build,
blowing her hair around, and for a moment, it
feels as if she is the only person alive.
§
She tries to remember his eyes. They were her
favorite feature of his, because they were so full of
life and love. And how they lit up when she
walked into the room. After their experience,
he never looked at her the same way; his eyes like
a lifeless fire. That day had been cold, but
she was warm knowing he was there with her.
She had felt so safe and secure when they
were together. But now, as the sun slowly goes
down, she shivers with nothing but darkness
enclosing in on her fast as she sits all alone.
As hard as she tries, she cannot remember
what had happened. It was a day with something
that ended their relationship forever. There had
to be a reason for this.
§
The sun is gone and she notices she should get home.
She hears a slight movement from behind, which warns
her to move fast. She races down the side of the
mountain, getting caught in more bushes. From her
position, she can see the trail leading down.
On her way toward it, she trips on a branch and is
sent flying through the air and tumbling into an
enormous rock. Slowly falling backward, she hears
a number of breaks. Now barely breathing, she knows
this must be the end. She hadn't told anyone where
she was going, therefore nobody would come looking
for herhere. She glances at her hand, which had been
holding on to her aching ribs. It was blood
red, and so was everything else around her.
§
They say, before death, all questions are answered,
and suddenly, she knows and remembers
every detail of that day. That horrible, heart
breaking day... She had admitted that she loved him.
He must not have understood or felt the same way,
because he left her there on the cold mountain to
cry alone.
§
She hums to the soft singing of the wind as a tear
falls into her hand. Taking her last breath, she thinks
of his eyes one last time...
