Description:
Kaine (prounced cane) is georgeous black standerdbred gelding. He was born on the 22/10/94 so he is now 8 years old. He stands at approx 15.3hh - my unoffical measuring! He has two white socks and a stripe on his face. He has a largish scar on his left hind leg which he got when he was a yearling (tangled up in wire) but this doesn't effect him in anyway. He has a few very minor little scars here and there from the paddock but these are hardley noticable. In the summer he does tend to go brownish with the sun but this could be prevented by having him covered. Like most standerdbreds bred in NZ he has a freeze brand on his neck. He is slim built but is toning up a lot with hill work.

Health and Manners:
He is in excellent health - he has never been ill while we have had him. Unfortunaley he has had a small splint in his left foreleg, but this is hardley noticeable. His manners are excellent around people but he does tend to be a bossy around other horses. He has good strong feet and doesn't need shoes unless you'll be doing a lot of road work. He's a good doer- doesn't need hard feed if he's on reasonable amount of grass. He has a small wither so is easy to find saddles that fit and is ridden in a snaffle bit. He's excellent to catch, float, shoe, handle, worm etc. He's also very good in traffic. Kaine is a very friendly horse and loves attention. He has no vices.

History:
We brought Kaine in December 1999 straight from the racetrack. His racing career wasn't going to well because he just wasn't fast enough so he was only raced for one season. I got him when he was a 5 year old. He was going to go to the dog-meat factory but the people who were looking after him were having a go at selling him because his nature was so nice. They had broken him to saddle and taken him down to the beach a couple times so he'd never really done anything under saddle. His racing name was Devil Eyes and I have all his breeding and racing history.

Whats he like to ride?
Kaine is a nice horse to ride and doesn't do anything dirty. He never rears, bites or bucks. He may pig jump when he is fresh (usually when he has a dose of Spring Fever) but just needs a light tap with the whip which sorts him out. He trots 99% of the time and very rarely paces - this probably has something to do with his very short racing career. His canter is very smooth and rocking. He is willing to please his rider but he can be slow to react to the leg aids so I ride him in spurs for dressage/flat-work. I find at competitions he usually needs to have a 5 - 10 minute look around before he will concentrate on warming up for dressage. He is good to hack out alone or with company. When tacking up he is very well behaved - will only breathe out when you do the girth up! He gives you his head to put on his bridle and he doesn't pull back when tied up.

What have I done with him?
I have done a bit of most things with him- jumping, dressage, hacking, eventing, hunting and pony club etc. We've had wins and placings out of limited outings. We have just started competing at pre-training level with win's at intro level. Since we live in the hill country he has been well worked on the hills. I take him for dressage lessons now & then and he is learning to come on the bit and collect himself up. He is a very capable jumper, we are currently jumping 80cm at home. He has a huge scopey jump and hardley ever hits a pole. He's not a very bold jumper but he would get better with experince and he needs a confident rider. His highest dressage score so far is 19.0 so he has plently of potential. He often gets 8's for his trot and has had a 9 - his canter is the pace that lets him down but with a bit more work he'll be great.

Pre-training XC - Not the best photo as was the last jump and was getting tired.
