Melanie C takes to the stage sporting an 'I Love Derby' T-shirt. And judging by the screams from the crowd, tonight Derby loves Melanie C. Mel certainly knows how to give the audience their money's worth. She stays on stage for almost an hour and a half to perform every song from her debut album as well as most of her B-sides and unreleased track Independence Day. And even a broken foot can't keep her from rocking out to Goin' Down and Gaga. But rock isn't all Ms Chisholm can turn her hand to and the best numbers of the night come when she slows down with acoustic ballads Be The One and Closer. Other highlights include the debut live performance of album track Why and the encore, an extended Ibiza-worthy rendition of I Turn To You. With Mel's voice sounding better than ever before, each note sends the crowd into a frenzy. Despite the usual smattering of deely-boppered preteens, tonight's audience seem barely interested that Melanie is also one quarter of the biggest girl group in the world. That, and the omission of the punk version of Wannabe Mel performed on her first solo tour, are testimony to the fact that she no longer needs to prove herself as a solo artist. If the other three Spices' solo careers have even half the impact of Mel's, the foursome, both together and apart, will continue breaking records for as long as they're making them.
