| Overview and Programs |
Water
puppetry is Vietnamese performing art dating back to ancient times. The first
show is claimed to have been staged during the Ly's Dynasty. In 1121, a
prormance was put on in honour of the King's longevity. A stele can be found at
Doi Pagoda in Nam Ha Province bearing an inscription to support this claim
.Water is used to activate the puppets while at the same time hiding the
apparatus is an example of tremendous creativity. The water gives breath to the
puppets and make them appear almost lively. In contrast, the water swells
dramatically to contribute to the intensity of a naval battle and adds to
element of fear produced by powerful dragons. Amid the scenery the audience has
an opportunity to enjoy an artistic type in which land, water, wind, fire and
smoke are combined to create the most spectacular scenes. There is a perfect
harmony between art and nature in water puppetry.
