Include the following information, if available: nesting habits, behavior and territory, food habits and diet, description and size of the young and adult birds, migratory habits (if it is not a permanent resident), and any unusual characteristics about the bird that you find interesting.

e. Visit a bird refuge. Describe its purpose and give the management techniques used. We will visit the James Campbell National Wildlife Refuge in Kahuku. The refuge is run by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for endangered Hawaiian waterbirds. We will be doing a service project to learn some of the management techniques used to manage the refuge.

 

_____ 7. Do one of the following (this is probably the hardest requirement):

 

a. Build a backyard bird sanctuary by planting trees and shrubs for food and cover. Describe what birds you hope to attract and why.

 

b. Build three different kinds of bird feeders. Keep them stocked with food for 3 months. Describe what kinds of birds are attracted to them and why. Indicate what kinds of foods were liked best.

 

c. Take 12 clear, sharp, recognizable pictures of 12 species of birds.

 

d. Build a watering device for birds. Keep it filled for 3 months. Tell what kinds of birds used it. Describe any intersting things you saw.
