Chapter 22

Buck sat on his bunk just enjoying watching Kat as she lay reading. She was still very weak after two days in bed, but she was more like the old Kat. The doctor had stitched the gashes in her face and Kat had been worried about the scars that would be left, but Buck assured her they wouldn't matter to him. He hadn't said it out loud, but they'd probably always remind him to be completely honest with her.

Cody walking into the bunkhouse pulled Buck out of his admiration. Kat looked up and smiled, setting her book down.

"I just wanted to tell you two goodbye." Cody announced as he removed his hat and sat in the chair next to Kat. Buck got up from his bunk and walked across the room.

"I thought you might want this back." Cody said, pulling Kat's watch from his pocket.

Kat looked at Cody in disbelief. She had thought her watch was gone forever. It had been the hardest thing in the world for her to trade the watch, but at the time she knew it would have been harder to stay in Sweetwater any longer.

"Thank you." Kat said, still in shock. "But how…?" Kat began.

"Let's just say the livery owner can't pass up a great deal." Cody chuckled, happy to see Kat was pleased.

Kat sat smiling up at Cody, not knowing what to say. That was all the thanks Cody needed.

"Well, I better get going." Cody said regretfully as he placed a kiss on Kat's cheek. He stood up and hugged Buck, then headed toward the door.

"Cody." Kat called after him. Cody turned and looked at her. "Thank you, for everything."

Cody simply tipped his hat, smiled widely and walked out.

Buck sat in the chair next to Kat and watched her as she stared happily at the watch.

"Maybe it's about time you explained 'My Savior' to me." Buck said, cocking an eyebrow at Kat.

Kat gasped as she realized she still hadn't explained the message in the watches to Buck. She really hadn't had a chance, and when she did, she didn't think it would matter anyway. But, now she knew he would find the story as special as she did.

"Well, you know the watches belonged to my parents." Kat began. Buck nodded eager to hear the rest of the story.

"My parents met at a church dance when they were sixteen." Kat began. "My mother's father was a rancher and my father was riding with a gang of horse thieves. How's that for star-crossed?" Kat chuckled as she recounted the story she'd fallen in love with as a young girl. "But my parents swore it was love at first sight."

"A few nights after they met, my father's gang hit my grandfather's ranch." Kat continued. "My father was wounded and my grandfather was going to turn him over to the law. But, my mother begged for his life, and convinced my grandfather not to turn him in, but to give him a job on the ranch."

Buck smirked realizing Kat must have gotten her strength and stubbornness from both parents. Not every young girl would stand up to her father to save a criminal.

"Well, a few months later, my mother and father were in town when the bank was held up. Shooting broke out and my father took a bullet for my mother." Kat went on. "My grandfather was so grateful, he offered my father his choice of any stock. But, all my father wanted was permission to court my mother. After a few days, and some pleading from my mother, my grandfather finally agreed. And a year later, my parents got married."

Buck sat absorbing the story of Kat's parents for a few moments.

"But what about the watches?" Buck asked impatiently, realizing he still didn't completely understand where they had come from.

"Their wedding gifts to each other." Kat smiled. "They said the watches were their promise to save each other forever."

Buck smiled at the sweet explanation. He also understood how Kat's parents felt about each other, because he had finally realized he felt the same way about Kat.

"My father died convinced you were the one who would save me forever." Kat smiled hopefully at Buck. Honestly, she too hoped Buck was the one meant for her. She hadn't really believed that when she showed up in Sweetwater, but now she wanted nothing more than to be with him for the rest of her life.

"I do want to save you forever." Buck said sincerely as he slowly leaned toward Kat.

"Now wait a minute!" Kat said playfully pushing Buck away. "Maybe you're the one who needs saving forever." She laughed as she pulled Buck back toward her and kissed him passionately.

The End!
