Buck awoke in a panic. He didn't know how he had gotten to the bunkhouse, and he didn't really care. His only thought once he was awake enough to think clearly was Kat.
The last time he saw Kat was cloudy in his mind, but he knew she had been in danger. He recalled seeing her struggle against one of the robbers as he tried to get to his knife. He had watched, helpless, as Kat had raised her gun and fired at the man standing over him. The sound of two distinct gunshots was the last thing he heard before he blacked out.
"Buck, I'm right here." A voice said from out of his line of sight.
Buck jerked his head quickly toward the voice. As he fought off dizziness and focused, he saw Jen sitting by his side. A man was sitting with her, with his arm around her shoulders, comforting her. Buck assumed it must be Matthew.
"Where's Kat?" Buck demanded. He thought of all the worst scenarios his mind could come up with for why she wasn't by his side.
Jen stiffened slightly, and Matthew gently tightened his grip on her shoulder.
"Would you get the others?" Jen asked softly. He nodded, then glanced at Buck sadly before stepping out the door.
"Where's Kat?" Buck demanded again, more frantically. Jen took a deep breath. "She's gone, Buck." She said gently as she took his hand.
"What do you mean she's gone!" Buck cried, fearing the worst. Cody, Lou, Kid and Teaspoon filed into the building quickly as Buck continued searching for information about Kat's fate. Jen was trying to explain, but Buck was so upset she didn't have time to speak. And his grip on her hand had tightened to the point of being painful.
"What happened to her!" Buck screamed, giving up on Jen and looking at Cody.
"She left." Cody said plainly.
"What do you mean she left?" Buck asked, relaxing a little at the change of a single word.
"You asked for Jen, so Kat decided to leave." Cody answered curtly. "She told me she was going to leave this morning, but when I went to her room, she was already gone."
Buck looked around the room in shock. He was finally sure what he felt about Kat, and he had driven her away with something he didn't even mean to do. He knew she had saved him, and had risked her own life to do it. He smirked slightly as he recalled her promising to save him if they ever saw each other again. He finally began to understand the message in the watch that she had given him.
"Cody, you've got to find her." Buck pleaded desperately.
Cody nodded. He had hoped that would be Buck's response, which is why he had already been saddling his horse when Matthew came to tell everyone Buck was awake.
"I'll bring her back." Cody assured his friend. "I promise."
