The Vulture holds a special place in StarCraft because it's the vehicle of choice for Jim Raynor, one of the game's main characters. His Vulture, however, is a souped-up version of the normal craft and isn't representative of the Vulture as a unit. The Vulture is a hovercycle that's fast, powerful, and very effective when quick response time is critical.

The Vulture uses Fragmentation Granades as its primary weapon and, although they pack a decent punch, their effectiveness is diminished against heavily armored enemies. The Vulture's speed is its greatest asset, because it can travel quickly from hot spot to hot spot in groups of three or four. This method of putting out fires can be very effective, especially when you're defending a sprawling base from intermittent attacks.

The Vulture's special weapon is the Spider Mine. These little devices are very effective as both defensive units and an early warning system. You must research Spider Mines and when you get them, there are only three mines per Vulture. However, its power makes the Spider Mine worthwhile. After you set a Spider Mine, it burrows into the ground and waits for an enemy unit to get close. When it senses an enemy within its strike zone, it emerges and runs (quickly) at the enemy unit. The resulting explosion will ususally take out the enemy unit and severely damage any others nearby.

The armoed Vulture Hover Bikes, used primarily for scouting and myriad wastelands of the Terran Colonies, are designed for speed and reliability. The Limited Gravity Hover Technology used by the Vulture allows it to travel over rough terrain without loss of traction or speed. Although ill-suited for heavy combat, they make excellent skirmishers and the bike-mounted grenade launcher is extremely effective against lightly armored targets.
