Not ever after

With Tom Green, her husband of five months, filing for divorce last week, Drew Barrymore is single again.

Just five months into their supposedly fairytale marriage, Drew Barrymore and Tom Green have shocked Hollywood by announcing their plan to divorce.
Even though the two are renowned for pulling pranks when it comes to their relationship, the bust-up appears to be deadly serious, with Tom filing divorce papers last week on the basis of “irreconcilable differences”.

Releasing a statement afterwards, Tom confirmed the split, saying, “Drew is a wonderful woman. I love her very much. I wish our marriage could have worked out. I wish her much happiness.”
Tom gave no reason for the break-up, and the mystery deepened as, when the news broke, Drew’s publicist, Jennifer Allen, confessed she was unaware of the divorce- and was unable to contact the actress. But the next day Drew released a statement saying, “Yes, it is true we have decided to part. I love Tom very much. He has always been a great friend and that will not change.”
Allen went on to say that the actress was “not surprised” by the filing, and that the pair would share custody of Drew’s dog, Flossie.

Yet as recently as two weeks ago Drew was gushing about the strength of their union. Speaking to NW earlier this month, she said, “We’re so happy, it’s pathetic.”

So, what went wrong? Pals are speculating that her latest flick, Driving in cars with Boys, was the cause. One friend says the film led to Drew becoming :exhausted and an emotional wreck”, and that the movie’s lack of sucess placed a huge strain on the couples fledging marriage.

Twenty-six year old Drew and 30 year old Tom have kept us guessing ever since they met on the set of Charlie’s Angels in March 2000.

They were engaged by that July, but then staged a mock wedding on Saturday Night Live the following November, with Drew leaving Tom at the altar, as she apparently changed her mind at the last minute.
Tom then claimed they had actually married in the South Pacific earlier last year, before they changed their story and did it for real on July 7 in front of their families and friends, including Courtney Love (who’s daughter Frances Bean was a flower girl), Adam Sandler, Cameron Diaz and Jared Leto.

When she spoke about her wedding day, Drew, who played a cinderella role in Ever After said it was the happiest day of her life. “Mine was the most beautiful wedding I’ve ever been to,” she enthused. “It was insanely cool…next to the ocean, with white Chinese lanterns. We had a stage with a microphone hooked up so everyone could get up and make speeches and sing songs. It was the most humorous, coolest thing I’ve ever seen… everything I could hope for.”

However, the pair have had their fair share of problems throughout the relationship. Tom endured testicular cancer and feared he might not be able to father children, then Drew’s Hollywood Hills home burned down – with the couple almost caught inside.
Adding to their woes was Tom’s diresctional debut, Freddy Got Fingered, which critics described as one of the worst flicks of the year. Yet, despite all this, it looked as if they’d become stronger than ever.

During an interview just a month ago Drew proclaimed, “With Tom I felt totally relaxed, which is such a relief. Tom is one of the first people in my life who believes in permanence. When I saw he wanted to believe in it with me, I was willing to take a risk.”
