CD Now
Whether or not it reaches the heights of its predecessor is the stuff of water-cooler debates. One thing is for sure, though: this album smokes! Blues fans as well as rock listeners will definitely take a liking to BLUES BROTHERS 2000. There are some fine originals and re-workings here and the tempo never slows. The musicianship throughout is excellent, but doesn't sacrifice spontaneity. This is borne out by "Born In Chicago" (with a wailin' harmonica solo), "The Blues Don't Bother Me" and "Maybe I'm Wrong." While The Blues Brothers Band provides a solid backing, there are also some funky vocals by Dr. John and Aretha Franklin. While many legends participate on this album, legends-to-be also contribute: Johnny Lang, Erykah Badu, and Blues Traveler represent the next generation. All in all, this soundtrack is a fine continuation of the Blues Brothers legacy (and some excellent party music to boot!).

Much of Eric Clapton's haunting new album is informed by the smooth R&B textures of his 1996 collaboration with Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds, "Change the World." Yet Pilgrim is the work of someone who has learned in the hardest way imaginable that although he cannot change the world, he might be able to change himself. On Pilgrim we encounter a Clapton who is heartbroken but artistically reinvigorated, a guitar hero who knows too well that despite that flattering "Clapton Is God" graffiti of yore, he is entirely human.
Pilgrim is easily Clapton's most ambitious, introspective piece of work since his days with the legendary, lacerating Derek and the Dominos. Paradoxically both slickly polished and surprisingly intimate, the album is a loosely themed soul-song cycle in the tradition of Marvin Gaye. Pilgrim is full of big queries -- "How did I get here?/What have I done?" Clapton sings in the opening "My Father's Eyes," a powerful meditation that alludes to both the father Clapton never knew and the son who so tragically died in 1991. From the song titles ("River of Tears," "Broken Hearted," "Going Down Slow," "Sick and Tired") on down, Pilgrim is the musical journal of an artist who has wandered into some dark places and come back the wiser for his troubles.
Most important, Pilgrim offers the bracing sound of Clapton fully engaged by the songwriting process in a way he's rarely been. Too often he's been happy to fill up his albums with suitable material from assorted blues greats such as J.J. Cale and Jerry Lynn Williams -- at certain times in his long career, Clapton has seemed so retiring as to be a sort of lead special guest on some of his own star-studded records. Pilgrim finds Clapton writing or co-writing every song except "Born in Time," an overlooked Bob Dylan tune, and "Going Down Slow," a classic blues written by St. Louis Jimmy. The album is panoramic enough to include a little high--class mood music, such as the liltingly sexy "Needs His Woman" (featuring Tony Rich on backing vocals) and "You Were There," a vaguely "Wonderful Tonight"-like mash note that sounds like a love song but is said to be a tip of the hat to Clapton's longtime manager, Roger Forrester.
Clapton's songwriting collaborator and co-producer here is Simon Climie; the pair also worked together on 1997's Retail Therapy, an uneven side project (recorded under the moniker T.D.F.) that featured heavy sampling and other modern techniques. But Retail Therapy and Clapton's recent film-scoring work have apparently paid dividends on Pilgrim. The album is an intriguing musical tableau that incorporates old-school R&B, orchestral maneuvers and dashes of (gulp!) electronica. There's acoustic and electric guitar, drums both real (by Steve Gadd) and programmed (by Paul Waller and Climie), and a plentiful and often inventive use of strings by the London Session Orchestra. Not everything works -- the backing vocals by Chyna occasionally grow a tad too sweet -- but overall it's an effective modern context for Clapton.
There is wonderful, graceful guitar work throughout Pilgrim -- no big surprise there. But the album isn't a flashy axfest, even though tracks like "She's Gone" and the straight-ahead blues "Sick and Tired" feature classic riffing. Pilgrim is notable more because it finds Clapton taking a great leap forward as a vocalist. Some forget that Clapton wasn't even considered the best singer in Cream; over the years, though, he has sure grown into his voice. On the album's sizzling title track, he evokes some of the soulful eloquence of the great Curtis Mayfield. And Clapton's vocals on "River of Tears" and "Broken Hearted" (with lovely backing vocals and tin whistle from Paul Brady), the ultradelicate "Circus" and the country-tinged "Fall Like Rain" are among the most convincing of his career.
Pilgrim will not thrill those looking for From the Cradle II -- most of this state-of-the-charts album sounds absolutely nothing like any record Muddy Waters ever made. But it's still a blues album in the sense that it captures the sound of a man trying to tame hellhounds from within and without. In the end, Pilgrim is not purely anything, except purely moving. Since donning an Armani suit back in the decadent '80s, Eric Clapton's music has become more polished as he's gotten older. Despite recording the all-blues FROM THE CRADLE collection in 1994, E.C. has either gone unplugged, collaborated with silky-smooth soulsters such as Babyface, or dabbled with current electronic trends. PILGRIM finds Slowhand doing all of the above on his first album of original material in nearly a decade. Unlike many older artists dipping their toes into the electronic pool, Clapton and co-producer Simon Climie's restrained use of programming gilds rather than overwhelms these original numbers.
In a welcome turn, Clapton wrote or co-wrote every song with the exception of Bob Dylan's "Born In Time" and "Going Down Slow," a St. Louis Jimmy blues nugget. Joined by Babyface on the former, Clapton gives both songs a lite-jazz treatment that meshes well with a burnished vocal style that sounds as if he's been listening to Curtis Mayfield recently. Complementing Clapton's emotive vocalizing is his always formidable guitar playing. Whether he politely funks it up on "She's Gone" or indulges his blues jones on the slow shuffle of "Sick And Tired," Eric Clapton's musical development continues to be a steady pilgrimage into the new millenium.





Current Biography from All Music Guide

By the time Eric Clapton launched his solo career with the release of his self-titled debut album in August 1970, he was long established as one of the world's major rock stars due to his group affiliations -- the Yardbirds, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Cream, and Blind Faith -- affiliations that had demonstrated his claim to being the best rock guitarist of his generation. That it took Clapton so long to go out on his own, however, was evidence of a degree of reticence unusual for one of his stature. And his debut album, though it spawned the Top 40 hit After Midnight, was typical of his self-effacing approach: It was, in effect, an album by the group he had lately been featured in, Delaney & Bonnie & Friends.
Not surprisingly, before his solo debut had even been released, Clapton had retreated from his solo stance, assembling from the D&B&F ranks the personnel for a group, Derek and the Dominos, with which he played for most of 1970. Clapton was largely inactive in 1971 and 1972, due to heroin addiction, but he performed a comeback concert at the Rainbow Theatre in London on January 13, 1973, resulting in the album Eric Clapton's Rainbow Concert (September 1973).
But Clapton did not launch a sustained solo career until July 1974, when he released 461 Ocean Boulevard, which topped the charts and spawned the #1 single I Shot the Sheriff.
The persona Clapton established over the next decade was less that of guitar hero than arena rock star with a weakness for ballads. The follow-ups to 461 Ocean Boulevard, There's One in Every Crowd (March 1975), the live E.C. Was Here (August 1975), and No Reason to Cry (August 1976), were less successful. But Slowhand (November 1977), which featured both the powerful Cocaine (written by J.J. Cale, who had also written After Midnight) and the hit singles Lay Down Sally and Wonderful Tonight, was a million-seller, and its follow-ups, Backless (November 1978), featuring the Top Ten hit Promises, the live Just One Night (April 1980), and Another Ticket (February 1981), featuring the Top Ten hit I Can't Stand It, were all big sellers.
Clapton's popularity waned somewhat in the first half of the '80s, as the albums Money and Cigarettes (February 1983), Behind the Sun (March 1985), and August (November 1986) indicated a certain career stasis. But he was buoyed up by the release of the boxed set retrospective Crossroads (April 1988), which seemed to remind his fans of how great he was. Journeyman (November 1989) was a return to form.
It would be his last new studio album for nearly five years, though in the interim he would suffer greatly and enjoy surprising triumph. On March 20, 1991, Clapton's four-year-old son was killed in a fall. While he mourned, he released a live album, 24 Nights (October 1991), culled from his annual concert series at the Royal Albert Hall in London, and prepared a movie soundtrack, Rush (January 1992). The soundtrack featured a song written for his son, Tears in Heaven, that became a massive hit single.
In March 1992, Clapton recorded a concert for MTV Unplugged that, when released on an album in August, became his biggest-selling record ever. Two years later, Clapton returned with a blues album, From the Cradle, which became one of his most successful albums, both commerically and critically. Crossroads 2: Live in the '70s, a box set chronicling his live work from the '70s, was released to mixed reviews. In early 1997, Clapton, billing himself by the pseudonym x-sample, collaborated with keyboardist/producer Simon Climie as the ambient new-age and trip-hop duo T.D.F. The duo released Retail Therapy to mixed reviews in early 1997.
Clapton retained Climie as his collaborator for Pilgrim, his first album of new material since 1989's Journeyman. Pilgrim was greeted with decidedly mixed reviews upon its spring 1998 release, but the album debuted at number four and stayed in the Top 10 for several weeks on the success of the single My Father's Eyes.

Tony Rich Talks About Trading Favors With Eric Clapton

The Tony Rich Project is back in stores with BIRDSEYE, an album that offers another dose of the group's acclaimed soul/R&B/funk mix as well as a few other surprises.

Among the unexpected treats on BIRDSEYE is the guitar work of Eric Clapton, a friend of Rich's who lends his considerable talents to the album without asking for credit in the album's liner notes.

"We asked him to play some stuff, but the whole ordeal just got so blown out of proportion," Rich told MTV News of his work with the guitar great. "There was some allegations that I had him on the album as some type of promotional stunt, but I don't have to have anyone on my album to promote my album. Me and Eric are friends and I wanted him to play guitar, he wanted me to sing back-up, and we just exchanged favors. There wasn't any money involved. I didn't pay him, he didn't pay me, it was just like that. It was real cool though, but Eric really wanted to be a part of playing some guitar parts, but he didn't really want to play it up. He just wanted to be one of the musicians like all the other guys that I use. It was cool. It was a good feeling. So we're happy that we did exchange our talents with each other."

Rich and Clapton first met at one of Rich's concerts in London, and the two soon formed a fast friendship. Rich recorded backing vocals for Clapton's PILGRIM album, and in addition to getting some guitar work in return, there have been other benefits to hisfriendship with Clapton.

"He actually hipped Sheryl Crow to my record, so it's cool," Rich said. "I'm just glad that we connected as friends and we were not connected by the labels saying, 'Hey, why don't you guys get together and do something?' You know how labels do that. 'Why don't you guys get together and do something and pay us?'

Plot summary -

Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh, each now feeling too old to be doing what they're doing, try to stop the Chinese Triads from doing their illegal business in the U.S. Uncle Benny, Chinatown's mob boss, has imported Chinese slaves to pay for an artist to create counterfeit Chinese currency which the Triads (led by Jet Li) will use to buy the Four Fathers (heads of the Triads) back from the Chinese military. Chris Rock joins the team as a new cop and Rianne's husband. Lorna is pregnant and considers marriage with Riggs, and Leo Getz is back, now as a private investigator.

Over 20 years after the original line-up of the Band played their last show at the Winterland in Thanksgiving of 1976, founders Levon Helm, Garth Hudson and Rick Danko continue to plow their brand of homespun, American roots music on JUBILATION. Rounded out by Randy Ciarlante, Jim Weider and Richard Bell, The Band press ahead with plenty of mandolin, accordion and dobro on a batch of songs that are the aural equivalent of tooling around the backroads of the Deep South. You can almost feel the rhythm of the tracks under your feet as "Last Train To Memphis" chugs along with an assist by some of guest Eric Clapton's tastier playing, whereas Rick Danko's plaintive vocals draw a map to the farm mentioned on "High Cotton."
Levon Helm remains the heart of the Band, and his nasal twang remains a high point, resonating throughout "Kentucky Downpour" or on a duet with John Hiatt on the latter's Celtic-flavored "Bound By Love." Of course, no trip down South would be complete without a swing through New Orleans, represented by Tom "Bones" Malone's funky horn arrangements on "Spirit Of The Dance" and the Band's easy-going take on Allen Toussaint's "You See Me."

CMJ New Music Report -
Although Robbie Robertson left The Band many years ago to pursue a solo career, Garth Hudson, Levon Helm and Rick Danko have continued under their original name, and remain one of the best roots rock groups in existence. Jubilation speaks volumes about the band's ability to continue its musical legacy as well as about the amount of respect it continues to earn, as proved here by cameos from fans John Hiatt and Eric Clapton.
