Eric Clapton's performance of "Change The World" won the 1997 Grammy Awards for Record Of The Year and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. The song, written by Gordon Kennedy, Wayne Kirkpatrick and Tommy Sims, won the Grammy for Song Of The Year.
PHENOMENON is a study in soundtrack as collaborative art form. A variety of producers, overseen by veteran Robbie Robertson, worked together to create a collection of songs that resonates with the spirituality of the film, which is about a small-town man (John Travolta) who suddenly becomes a super-human genius.
The uniting of diverse songwriters, musicians, and producers yields unique and delightful results. Singer Aaron Neville teams up with guitarist Robertson on Van Morrison's "Crazy Love," and Jewel covers John Hiatt's "Have A Little Faith in Me." Another standout is a new, more softly- and acoustically-arranged version of Peter Gabriel's "I Have the Touch," which also includes guitar work by Robertson. Each collaboration feels serendipitous and slightly magical, paralleling the film itself.

Equally talented as a singer, songwriter, keyboardist and guitarist, Babyface has done more than anyone to shape the face of modern R&B, writing and producing for a variety of artists and inspiring a league of imitators who pale in comparison to the original. On THE DAY, his first solo album since 1993's FOR THE COOL IN YOU, he makes it plain that there ain't nothing like the real thing.
Babyface is capable of conjuring many moods, but his forte is the slow, sensual ballad. On the opening "Everytime I Close My Eyes," he envelops the listener in a slinky, simmering world where an undertow of subtle drum loops and mellow synthesizer washes pulls you down into the heart of the song. ("Everytime" features pop-jazz saxophonist Kenny G, who released the song simultaneously on his album THE MOMENT). While much of THE DAY is preoccupied with the eternal pop topic of romance, Babyface shifts gears on "Simple Days," a reflective tune that finds him recalling his poor-but-happy childhood with a wistful longing. LL Cool J and Jody Watley guest on the closing tour de force, "This Is For The Lover In You."

Babyface's career has been a series of one success story after another. He's amassed several gold and platinum albums, and even a highly publicized break up with former partner L.A Reid hasn't slowed him down. In recent years, he's written, produced and sung with everyone from Boyz II Men to Eric Clapton, and his name has become synonymous with romance. In the age of machismo and women being portrayed in R & B music as mostly bitches and hoes, Face is well-known for once claiming he'd cook and pay the rent for a ladyfriend. Even though he's the type of brother who's more comfortable staying in the background, Babyface's sensitive man approach has helped him flourish as a solo artist. While he has yet to have a colossal failure or set back, it saddens me to report that his latest solo creation, The Day, just isn't up to snuff. Although the album's peculiar, hip-hop-inspired first single, "This Is For The Lover In You" (a remake of the Shalamar classic, featuring the original group and a guest rap from LL Cool J), is blowing up on the national charts, the rest of this 10-song album yields several unsatisfying moments. "Every Time I Close My Eyes," featuring Mariah Carey on background vocals and Kenny G on saxophone, reveals a heavy, adultcontemporary vibe that pervades much of the album. The fluffy "I Said I Love You," the boring "When Your Body Gets Weak" and the corny "Simple Days" will leave you wondering how `Face could write such conventional material. Can it be that his magic pen of hits has run out of ink? Even a cameo by Stevie Wonder on "How Come, How Long" (a song about domestic violence) can't save The Day from being Babyface's first embarrassing artistic blemish to an otherwise perfect, and certainly successful, career.
