This was a memorial concert to honor Ian 'Stu' Stewart, the original "Sixth Stone" and pianist for The Rolling Stones. He had died of an unexpected heart attack 12 December 1985. A very small audience limited to close friends and family members were invited to the 100 Club in London.
The set list was comprised solely of blues numbers, which where Stu's favorites. His own band, Rocket 88, opened the show.

  When Clapton's name comes up, you think guitar-bluesy and hot-and if you've seen a recent live performance you know the man's still got most of what he had when, fifteen years ago, he was the most respected rock guitarist on earth. But when you release AUGUST in December and have Phil Collins produce (and play drums), things could start sounding a tad iffy. Collins calls in Greg Philinganes (keyboards), and the Brecker Brothers and Jon Faddis (horns) to add punch and flash, but they come at the expense of hearing E.C. play, and often bury his vocals. For Clapton at his best, scuse the fluff and get right to stuff that matters: "Tearing Us Apart" (a rockin' duet with Tina Turner), "Miss You," the extended solo on "Bad Influence," and the ballad "Holy Mother" (stunning live-nobody can make a guitar weep like E.C. can), dedicated to the late Richard Manuel of The Band. John Mayall, where are you?

  Having made his presence known in the MTV universe with his video for "Forever Man," Eric Clapton returned to the studio to record AUGUST, and album that found him working with a broad spectrum of writers. Unlike BEHIND THE SUN's class reunion of Clapton side musicians, AUGUST found E.C. backed by keyboardist Greg Phillinganes, bassist Nathan East (later of jazz supergroup Fourplay) and drummer Phil Collins (who shared production duties with long-time Clapton knob-twirler Tom Dowd). Clapton collaborated with some renowned writer here, including Robbie Robertson ("It's In The Way That You Use It") and Stephen Bishop ("Holy Mother," dedicated to the recently deceased Richard Manuel). AUGUST also found Clapton eschewing old blues covers for newer material written by Robert Cray ("Bad Influence") and Motown songwriter Lamont Dozier ("Run," "Hung Up On Your Love"). The most exciting moment on the record comes during the mechanized funk of "Tearing Us Apart," a Clapton duet with the red-hot Tina Turner.

"I preferred the Bobby Bland song (track 11), which you didn't get to hear hardly at all, and it didn't get on to the soundtrack album. That was the better of the two cuts for me."

"I would like to get into the studio with The Big Town Playboys again and make a blues album. That will come after my next solo album, which I think I am going to do as a commercial venture again. Pretty much like - not perhaps as commercial as AUGUST was set out to be."
