the day stretches
wears thin and long
dragging its heels
reluctantly
i stand watching
slightly swaying
as the sun stalls
not quite moving
warm summer air
choked with the buzz
cicadias caught
in one long hour
dragonflies hover
swim in sun motes
leaving thick trails
through dusty fields
nervelessly hold
forgotten smokes
ash grows sullenly
waiting to move
only one thought
i am staring
distractedly straight
into the sunset
stifling cars crawl
on heat blistered roads
their noises fading
to my deaf mind
your voice twines
close in my ears
echoing memory
you are calling
heat fades from mind
i remember
your long cool hands
strong grasping mine
it seems that all
these miles apart
have disappeared
together now
my cigarette
decides to ash
and suddenly
i'm here again
wishing that i
was with you now
by your side at
the end of the day.
