Ska
One of the reasons I like ska so much (besides the fact
that you can't stay depressed for very long while you're
listening to it) is the fact that you really have to
be a musician to play it, not just pick up a guitar and
fuck around like too many of the "alternative" bands do
today. The drums require extremely fast hands, the
basslines are technically challenging and imaginative, the brass has to
be really tight or else the melodies sound out of tune,
and the guitar (usually) has less weight than in other
forms of music. Since I play bass, it's obvious why
I would pick ska as my favorite genre to play in.
