.

Born Jewel Kilcher, May 23/1974 in Utah (United States), but spent most of her childhood in Anchorage, Alaska. She began to sing at the age of 6 and sang along side of her singer/songwriter parents, Atz Kilcher and Nedra Carroll in local Eskimo villages and tourist attractions. When Jewel was 8 years old her parents divorced and she and her 2 brothers stayed with their father. They moved to Homer, Alaska where they lived on a 800 acre hobby farm. She toured with her father for the next 7 years, where she mastered the fine art of yodeling. Jewel as a teenage moved to Michigan to attend Interlochen Fine Arts Academy, where she began to write her first song. After she graduated she joined her mother in San Diego and suffering through a series of short lived day jobs she decided to flee the 9-5 world and took up residence in her van. She spent most of her days concentrating on her career in music, writing songs and poetry. Jewels first regular gig was at the Interchange, a coffee house in Pacific Beach. The word quickly spread and by 1993 she was the subject of a rabid local cult following. She signed with Atlantic Records in early 1995 and issued her debut LP *Pieces of You* It was a slow starter and didn't even break in the billboard pop charts until some 14 months after its release. The single *Who Will Save Your Soul* became a major hit and soon the Album became a best seller as well.
