Ministry Opportunities in Chennai for short-term outreach teams

Ministry Opportunities for Teams

There are many outreach opportunities for incoming outreach teams:

Beach Ministry
In conjunction with a church YWAM sometimes has outreaches in an affluent middle-class area of Madras. Many young people (as many as 10,000 some nights) spend evenings at Elliot's Beach. Through personal friendship building and music coffeehouses etc, we are reaching out to these young people, showing them that there is more to life than materialism.

Schools and orphanages
Teams during some parts of the year may have opportunities to conduct programs at Christian schools and orphanages. Many schools run by Christians are attended largely by Christian and non-Christian children, who are there for the quality education provided.

Church ministry
Since YWAM wishes to serve as an arm of the church, our outreach teams are often partnered up with churches in the Madras area. These churches provide opportunities for village ministry, drama ministry, visitng homes, discipleship, teaching, etc.

Village Ministry
YWAM Chennai has connections to ministry opportunities in other parts of Tamil Nadu and also Andhra Pradesh. Teams can work in village outreaches with YWAM and/or local churches. Many of the villages are very unreached with the gospel.

Easy to meet and interact with local people
Chennai is a good place to meet Indians and many in the city know some English. The children are especially friendly.

Various YWAM Ministries
The YWAM Slum ministry can sometimes work with Asian or Medical teams; the AIDS ministry sometimes has the need for one or two volunteers at a time to help; Discipleship Training programs often enjoy having foreign teams teach them dramas and songs; Neighbors Ministry could use a small team (more men) to live in a neighbors area and personally build friendships in the neighborhood. Teams to conduct prayer walks in various strategic areas of the city are also needed. .

Housing for teams
Teams are housed either at YWAM centres or in inexpensive lodges. If at a YWAM Centre, the cost is usually around $6 per day including room and board. Centres that often have teams include beach (in Kottivakkam, southeastern Madras, a few blocks from the ocean), Gowriwakkam (South of Madras in the "suburbs"; not far from Tambaram), and Paddappi (40km southwest of Madras, in a village area). Housing is generally bunk beds, thin mattresses and ceiling fans. Lodges usually are around $3 per person per night, and then the team is on it's own for food. There are lodges in various locations in Madras.
