NOTEworthy note-makers: Incubus

I usually like to feature unknowns. But this band is too good to miss. Their live performances are rock solid. The lead singer delivers flawless vocals (like totally perfect) while the bandmates complement each other nicely. It is such a relief to know there is a band out there that's actually great live. I also admire that they keep coming up with new music and keep doing their thing. They have accumulated much popularity and a large fanbase. But through all of that, it is most admirable that they have remained true to their core. As a fan, I like to see some consistency. And Incubus has stayed true to their sound, which I greatly appreciate. They are energetic, fun, and passionate on stage. If you wanna rock hard, rock to Incubus, mothersuckers.

NOTEworthy note-makers: The Color Turning

When you see this band live, you will realize how totally mesmerizing they are. Their songs are as powerful and as captivating as the setting sun. It is truly refreshing to see a band comprised of such a diverse group of people. Perhaps that is the key element to their astounding ambience. Ambient as they may be, they still rock hard. The lead singer is the epitome of rock. If rock were a person, he would be it. With his long hair and unshaven face, add to that flawless vocals and band-mates that totally complement each other and you've got yourself a great live show. Although some songs are not as great as others, their live performances make up for it. I promise. One of my favorites, "Ghost Song" is a great example of their sound. Listen to it and you will understand the wonders of their sweet, succulent awesomeness.

NOTEworthy note-makers: Senior Recreation

Watching this two-man band play is like being hypnotized by the warm surroundings of summer. Their relaxed and warm guitars are accompanied by digitally-enhanced melodies, which transforms their music into the ambient sound that makes it so beautiful. Somewhat a mix between Pinback and Earlimart, their music is totally captivating. If you listen carefully to their sound you may be able to see that it is influenced by breakbeat/ambient electronica. This fusion of acoustic emo and electronica works so well for them. And it is what I love about them. I was impressed by the technology used for their performance: namely the (not one, but) two mac laptops that they had chillaxin on the stage. Never have I seen such a high tech show. This was also the first concert that I went to which featured a movie projection. It must have taken forever to put together. It was clips taken from random movies/documentaries. I could sit there and watch it all day. I don't know why. Computers and movie projections: welcome to the 21st century. One of my favorites of theirs is "Lost in the Sound" which I feel is the perfect example of their style.

NOTEworthy note-makers: Over it

Originally a bunch of east coast kids, they relocated to beautiful southern california and in their own words: "we love it!" Now residing in Huntington Beach, they are rockin out all over Orange County. They recently had a thing in the Virgin Megastore at the Block. They are great. I just watched them. Their performaces pack a punch. And their perfect vocals deliver nothing but sweet-succulent awesomeness to the listener's ears. They started out with a few songs, romantically played with the pair of strings. Then they picked things up by bringing in the rest of the band, who were previously sitting in the crowd watching the acoustic set with everyone and when they got up and got onto stage, it was like, whoa! They're in the band? Why do they CONFUSE us? Not only is their playing awesome, but their songs are totally freakin awesome. The song entitled "We Are The Ordinary" is a must-listen for those who crave the upbeat, totally groovin, deliciousness. So for great musicmanship and showmanship, check out OVER IT. 5 stars/5 [ ]

NOTEworthy Composers

Carl Stalling
Stalling's works are known by many, for anyone who has watched the great cartoons of the old days would recognize his tunes. From the 1930s to the 1950s, Stalling composed music for the Warner Bros cartoons (Merrie Melodies & Looney Toons). His music brought the cartoons to life in a whole new light. Stalling's musical style was uniquely his own and it also broke away from the traditional structure of classical composition in that his music was composed to animate the actions of the cartoons. So there was no theme, variations, or development (if I have it in the right order) it was just presented to you in any way, shape, or form. But don't take my word for it, click to read a more in-depth analysis of stalling's work.

The Gershwin Brothers
George and Ira Gershwin were brothers who worked side-by-side.
Their works on Broadway and in Hollywood, glorified the Jazz Age.
