Dear Rose

When I did lay my eyes on you,
I saw a beauty unsurpassed;
And in my heart did glimmer hope,
Of love that would forever last.

You did come like a ray of light,
And in my heart did bloom;
And with that ray you lightened up,
The darkness of my gloom.

Soon you came to be the only rose,
The only rose in all my lives;
And when I water thee I fear,
Would too much water cut like knives?

It is so hard to understand,
That every rose must have a thorn;
But even with your thorns you are,
Unlike any beauty ever born.

Little was I to understand,
That though joy weren't water to a rose;
The salt water of my sorrows,
Could so easy make your petals close.

It took me time to understand,
That a rose ain't like no man;
There's nothing that can water you,
The wondrous way love can.

And all my love I give to you,
In hope that you may find;
That only Springs do come your way,
No Winter dark your mind.

Whenever I think of yesterdays,
Of sadness, troubles, sorrows;
I see your petals open up,
To show me glad tomorrows.
