The Auxiliary Fire Service Today
The A.F.S Today
To-day, the Civil Defence still retains the Auxiliary Fire Service with units in 18 Local Authority areas. The Authorities with one or more fire appliances are :
Carlow,
Cavan,
Clare,
Cork,
Donegal,
Dublin,
Kilkenny,
Leitrim,
Limerick,
Louth,
Meath,
Monaghan,
Offaly,
Sligo,
Tipperary,
Waterford,
Wicklow
The main function of the Auxiliary Fire Service is to provide a pumping service at flooding problems and to provide back-up when forest fires occur, examples including the forest fires which swept the country in the summer of 1995.
The Auxiliary fire Service throughout the country are located in such places as full time fire stations or council, corporation owned premises. Members usually train for a number of hours one or two days a week.
Training involves basic firefighting, first - aid and various pump operations.
Members are on call via telephones.
The appliances ( Fire Engines )used by the A.F.S, when required, have also been made available to the military service.
