Chapter V

Slowly coming to what senses she had left, Shennan strained to listen for anything familiar.

Okay, I hear beeping. That's not good. I hear a telly, well that's good. And I think I hear someone pacing. Oh, that's definitely not good. She thought to herself as she struggled to sit up.

After a few seconds she was sitting up straight.

Opening her eyes was the hard part. But when she did, she noticed that it was Isaac that as pacing the floor. And the telly was on, but was being ignored. Mykah was lying beside her. He was on the blanket that's why she had to struggle to sit up.

Examining herself she noticed a few bumps, bruises, and many cuts. She fingered her right eye and felt a bandage there. Yea. She said sarcastically to herself.

"Okay, you can stop with the pacing now." Shennan said as she sat up a little straighter.

Isaac stopped pacing and looked at her. "Finally, you decide to wake up." He retorted.

She rolled her eyes, "Oh, I know that you were really worried about me." She started, "But there's no need to worry now. Really." She said sarcastically.

Going over to the door, Isaac left.

She nodded firmly. "I'm glad he really cares about my health." She muttered as she pushed Mykah's hair away from his face.

He stirred a little, and rubbed his eyes. Looking up, he saw her looking down on him. Instantly he hugged her tightly.

Pain shot through Shennan's body, but she just hugged him back. The IV in her arm was really starting to hurt though.

Soon her room was crowded with people. Ms. Hurst, her father, Ryan, Stefani, Taylor was holding Mackie, Zac, and Isaac came back in. Then there were two people there that she didn't recognize.

"Please, tell me I don't have amnesia. Because I don't know you two." She said pointing to the pair of strangers.

Everyone laughed, but Shennan just stared at them. "Okay, I missed the funny part to that." She said looking at everyone.

"That's Mr. and Mrs. Hanson." Stefani said smiling.

"Oh." She said nodding that she understood. "Hi. But I still don't know you." She replied. "Okay, someone fill me in on what happened after I got to play the crash test dummy." She said looking around the group for volunteers.

"Umm, well you lost a lot of blood, and we all gave blood seeing who would best match you." Stefani started.

"And it turns out that mom's matched yours." Ryan finished.

"So you're saying, Ms. Hurst gave me her blood?" Shennan asked not quite sure if she understood. She was after all, just waking up.

Ms. Hurst nodded. "Yes." She said confirming her doubts.

She nodded slowly. "Okay, anything else?" She asked. "Anything at all?" She asked when no one answered. "Fine." She said getting a bit annoyed. "Please excuse me everyone, but I think I need to talk with my sister alone."

The all nodded and left. She nudged Mykah to go too. "Just wait outside in the hall, please?" She asked him.

He nodded and kissed her cheek, Shennan kissed him back and waited for him to leave before she started talking to Stefani.

"So what's been going on with Mykah?" She asked.

Stefani sat next to her on the bed. "Would you like me to be a good sister and lie, or do you want the truth?"

Shennan leaned back and looked up at the ceiling. "Be a good sister and lie." She responded quietly.

"Okay," She said nodding slowly. She put on a fake smile, and said, "He's doing great. He talks so much now that we're constantly telling him to be quiet.

Shennan smiled as Stefani tried to make her feel a little better by this extreme exaggeration.

"And Isaac thinks that it's great that you were gone for a while." She added slyly.

"Whoa, whoa. Wait a moment." She said holding up her hand. "Where does Isaac fit in here? I was mainly talking about Mykah."

Stefani smiled. "Well, he was really bummed out that you got hurt. He blames himself for it too. Saying that he shouldn't have been tickling Mykah in the first place. And Mykah blames himself, because he said that he knew better than to run into the street without looking both ways."

She sighed softly. "God, I'm tired. Anyway, is there stitches under this bandage?" She asked pointing to the one above her right eye.

"Yeah. But only like five." Stefani replied.

"Okay." She said sighing again. "Bring Isaac and Mykah in here please." She asked quietly.

"Are you sure you're up to dealing with them now? Maybe you should rest some more before you do." She suggested.

Shaking her head, she replied, "If I do it now I'll be able to sleep better." She said putting her hand over her mouth as she yawned.

Stefani nodded and left.

A few moments later Isaac and Mykah both walked in.

Shennan smiled at the two. "Good. Both of you can have a seat somewhere."

Isaac chose the foot of her bed, and Mykah took the spot right beside her on the narrow bed.

"Now I was told that both of you are blaming yourself for my accident." She said looking at both of them. They just avoided her gaze. "Okay, so it's true."

"It was my fault." Mykah whispered hugging her and crying softly.

"No, it was my fault." Isaac said still avoiding her gaze.

Shennan rolled her eyes. "Guy's if it's anyone's fault it's mine, and the driver of the car." She said sympathetically, as she wiped away Mykah's tears.

Isaac looked at her strangely. "And how do you propose that?" He asked.

"Just the fact that I saw the car coming, I knew I couldn't beat it, and I knew that I couldn't let my little brother get hurt." She said looking down at Mykah.

Then she looked back up at Isaac. "I knew what was going to happen before it did. I took the chance, and I paid for them. I'm just glad it wasn't severe." She said shuddering at the thought of a broken bone or anything worse.

"Well, now that you guys can no longer blame yourselves, leave me so that I can sleep." She said sternly.

Isaac nodded and picked Mykah up. He didn't protest and Shennan was grateful that he didn't. After they left she snuggled down into her blankets and closed her eyes.

Listening to the steady beeping of the machines, she fell asleep.

-

Shennan woke up to someone calling her. Rubbing her eyes carefully, she tried to focus on the figure in the doorway and the cheery voice.

After a few moments, she was able to focus on the person. It was a nurse.

"Why such an early wake up call?" She asked groggily.

"You're getting discharged today. The doctors say that the only thing that they are concerned about is the cut above your eye. And you don't need to stay in the hospital for that." The nurse replied.

"Is my family and friends here?" She asked sitting up excitedly.

The nurse nodded her head. "Yes, they're waiting for you." She said as she handed her a bag of clothes.

Shennan smiled at her. "Great." She said getting up.

"Where are you from?" The nurse asked.

The question made Shennan stop on her way to the bathroom. She turned around slowly. "London. Why do you ask?"

The nurse smiled. "Your accent. I should've known. Or at least took a guess."

Shennan smiled back and went into the bathroom. She had completely forgotten about her accent. She was so used to people talking just like her and not asking about it.

-

"Ahhh." Shennan said as she stretched out on her bed. "It feels good to be out of the hospital. I thought I was going to be in there forever." She said smiling at Stefani.

She smiled back. "No, not forever, Shennan. Forever is a long time."

Shennan started laughing. "You're right forever is a long time." She said as she continued to laugh.

Stefani joined in on her laughter. "Lunch's going to be ready soon." She said standing up.

Groaning, Shennan stood up also. "What's to eat?" She asked following her down the stairs.

"Don't know." Stefani said shrugging.

They seated themselves at the table and waited for everyone else to arrive.

"So what ate you asking for on your birthday?" Stefani asked suddenly.

"You mean our birthday." Shennan reminded her.

She nodded. "Well, yeah, that too."

Shennan shrugged. "Don't know yet. You?"

"I already had a great birthday present. She's sitting next to me." She replied seriously.

"Don't get me wrong." Shennan started. "You're a great birthday present also. But I'm asking for some more stuff." She said drinking her water.

Stefani laughed. "Me too."

"Maybe we could ask for a car." Shennan suggested nonchalantly as she shrugged her shoulders.

"Maybe we could." She replied thoughtfully, she liked the idea.
