Shennan woke up abnormally early and couldn't go back to sleep. After changing into fresh clothes she saw that Stefani was still asleep, and she didn't want to disturb her.
Deciding on taking a walk around the backyard she searched for her shoes and jammed her feet inside them. She walked around the backyard for about twenty minutes when she noticed Isaac was standing on his back porch watching her.
She smiled and waved at him, and he started to walk towards her.
"Mornin'." He said giving her a quick peck on the cheek.
"Morning." Shennan replied softly, she was silent for a moment then she just spoke out of nowhere. "Stef had a nightmare last night too." She said quietly. "After we had gone to bed and all."
Isaac's face grew worried and concerned. "What was it about?" He asked softly, as they continued to walk around the backyard.
She shrugged her shoulders, "I don't know. She wouldn't tell me. As if saying it would make it real or something."
"What was yours about? Because you gave everyone a scare with that scream." He said sliding his arm around her shoulders.
Leaning against him, Shennan took a deep breath. "I saw Stef trying to kill herself. Then she ran off when I tried to help her. Somehow we had ended up in this forest and my feet were bleeding, because they were bare and the stones and the branches sliced the skin. When we came to a clearing, she was staring at the road." She said shaking her head as if trying to shake out the confusion.
"I stepped towards and she stepped back. So I stepped back and she just stayed there. Smiling at me. I tried to get her to come back, I screamed at her to." She took a deep shaky breath. "I saw the car coming and I couldn't do anything. I couldn't move. And then..." She started.
"And then... Then she got hit." She said tears started streaming down her cheeks after the horrible image replayed itself again and again. As if to torment her for life.
Isaac embraced her tightly. "It's all right though." He whispered, "Stef's okay. You're okay. They're just dreams. That's all." He said soothingly as he stroked the back of her head.
She looked up at him. "They have to mean something!" She said almost in hysterics.
"Calm down." He said placing his hands on either side of her face. "Dreams and nightmares don't necessarily have to mean anything. All they are is a look at what can't happen." He said softly as he looked in her frightened eyes.
Realizing that he actually had a very good point, Shennan nodded her head. "Okay." She whispered as she closed her eyes to try and steady her breathing, her heart rate, and her thoughts.
Stefani rolled over in her bed. "Shennan?" She called out groggily. Rubbing the sleep out of her eyes she was able to focus on her empty bed.
She sat up straighter and started looking around her room. Shennan's suitcases were gone and her bed was empty and made.
Stefani was scared and started looking around frantically for her twin. She searched all through the house. And when she thought that what had happened in her nightmare last night, had been real she almost lost it. Not wanting to believe that her nightmare was real she continued searching for her sister.
After a few minutes of continuing her search in the house, she decided to start searching outside. That's when she saw her walking with Isaac. Sighing with relief, Stefani decided she had to break their moment and hug her sister to make sure that she was really there.
Walking up to them, she threw her arms around her and hugged her tightly.
Shennan didn't ask any questions. She just hugged her sister back, and just as tightly. She had a feeling that Stefani needed her to be there, so she was.
Isaac watched this for a moment. He thought about them both having nightmares on the same night. It's a coincidence. He rationalized with himself.
That's all it is. It's just a big coincidence. Even as he said this, he couldn't make himself believe it.
Maybe it is a sign, or that it means something we don't know about. He left himself to think that over for a few moments.
"Are you okay?" Shennan asked as she pulled back to look in Stefani's blue eyes.
She nodded silently. "Now I am. Sorry to have interrupted your moment, but I just needed to be with Shennan for a moment. " She said looking over at Isaac.
He shook his head. "Think nothing of it." He said kindly.
Smiling weakly Stefani nodded her head. "Thanks." She whispered, before hugging Shennan once again and felt her hug back. "I'll see you later." She said as she started to walk away.
"Wait!" She called out. "I need to go back inside for breakfast. And I'm sure Isaac hasn't had any yet either?" She questioned him.
Isaac shook his head again. "Not yet." He replied.
"Would you mind if Stef and I spent all day today together? She asked softly. "Just us?"
He gave her a small smile. "Not at all." He said sincerely. "Taylor and I'll just spend the day hanging." He grinned. "We can mope around together." He said in an attempt in humor.
Shennan laughed lightly and kissed his cheek in a truce friendship, "Thanks."
"You're welcome." He said as he gave her hand a gently squeeze before the two left for their house, and he left for his. I really hope everything turns out all right for them.
"Will you tell me about your nightmare last night now?" Shennan asked quietly as they both sat at the table with a bowl of fruit.
Stefani's face paled slightly. She nodded her head when some of the color came back into her cheeks. "I was walking in this graveyard. I stopped to sit on this stump and I saw someone with a heavy trench coat on. I decided to follow them because it seemed as if they didn't belong there. But I couldn't get to them because the fog thickened around me. So I waited until it started to lift."
She paused for a second then took a deep breath. "I knew it was a female under the coat. Because the figure was small like a female. I saw her as she threw her coat off, I tried to scream out to her but my voice was gone. I touched my throat and when I brought my hand down there was blood on it." She said as she looked at her hand in horror, as if she was relieving the scene.
"She lunged at me and I fought her. I couldn't see her face but I saw her eyes." Stefani said as she looked at Shennan. "She had your eyes. Shennan, they were your eyes and she had a knife. We fought for control over it, and I stabbed her. Slowly she started to look more and more like you." She said shaking her head.
"Then you asked me why. Why I had killed you." A fresh batch of tears slowly slid down her cheeks.
Shennan lost what little appetite she had and went to hug her. "Tonight if we have these dreams again, we'll go to some specialist on dreams and ask why. Okay?" She asked as she pushed Stefani's hair back from her face.
She sniffled and nodded. "Okay."
They both stared at their untouched fruit. "I don't think that there is anyway I can choke that down right now." Shennan said as she continued to stare at her bowl of fruit across the table.
"Yeah." Stefani said as she looked at her own bowl of fruit.
"Mom, do you know why people have nightmares?" Isaac asked as he sat down at the table.
His mother was feeding Zoë some apple juice. She looked up at him. "Did you have a nightmare, Ike?" She asked concerned.
Isaac shook his head as Taylor walked in. "Shennan did last night when we were watching a movie." Taylor supplied as he started grabbing the necessities he needed for a bowl of cereal.
"She said that Stefani also had one last night when we all went to bed." Isaac added.
Taylor looked up quickly. "I'm going to give her a call." He said getting up.
"You'll be wasting your time." He said sighing.
"Why?" Taylor asked turning around.
"Because they're spending the whole day together." He said sighing again. "Just them."
Taylor frowned and sat back down in front of his bowl of cereal. He was quiet for a moment, and then he continued eating.
Mrs. Hanson finally spoke. "I don't know why we have nightmares." She said shrugging. "It's just human nature."
Isaac and Taylor had to accept their mothers answer. For they didn't have one of their own.
