Chapter XII

Shennan woke up to birds chirping, the smell of breakfast, and Mykah's hand slapping her in the face. She laughed slightly, and pushed his hand away.

Getting out of bed slowly, she got some fresh clothes, her bathroom kit, and a fresh towel.

After she got done taking a shower and changing, she walked back into her room. Mykah was sitting on the bed smiling at her. He was already dressed.

"What?" She asked smiling a small curious smile back at him.

"Where'd you go last night?" He asked as he continued to smile.

Shennan busied herself by looking for her socks and shoes. Making sure to keep her head down, so that she wouldn't have to look him in the eyes why she scowled over the memories of last night. "I went to the park."

He nodded and got off the bed. He was about to leave when she called him back in.

"Mykah? Why did you sleep in here last night, and the night before? I thought that you and Ryan were getting along?" She said as she looked at him. Reading his facial expression.

"You weren't here to say goodnight to me. And if I went to bed in Ryan's room you wouldn't have been able to. So I knew that if I slept in here, you wouldn't have to say goodnight. And I'd see you in the morning, or whenever I woke up during the night." Mykel said softly as he hung his head low. "Did I do something bad?" He asked quietly.

Shennan instantly went to him and hugged him tightly. "No." She said kissing his cheek. She hugged him tightly again. "No, you didn't do anything bad, or wrong." She pulled back and looked him in his gorgeous green eyes, "I promise that I will always try and be here to say goodnight. Okay?" She asked him.

Mykah smiled and nodded. "Okay." He answered happily.

She smiled back. "Okay, now give me another hug and a kiss." She said as she hugged him once again and kissed his cheek.

After he repeated the same progress, Shennan took his hand and they went downstairs. The smell of something burning drifted in the air.

When they reached the kitchen, they saw Stefani and Ryan putting out a grease fire.

She looked at them and started laughing. "Would you like some fruit with Mykah and I?" She asked kindly.

Stefani nodded quickly. "Ryan, did it." She accused, pointing her index finger at him.

He shrugged his shoulders recklessly. "Hey, at least I gave it a try." He stated, as he started cleaning up the mess he had made.

Taking out the fruit and placing them into four separate bowls, Shennan sat down at the table with her family. She thought as she chewed, wondering what it was going to be like living in Tulsa now, and not London. Am I going to lose my accent? She thought in horror.

She looked over at Mykah quickly. Will he? Will my father lose his?

"Shennan?" Stefani asked waving her hands in front of her face.

Snapping out of her trance, Shennan looked around the table. "Excuse me, what?" She asked.

She started laughing. "I asked did you have fun last night in the park?"

"Oh, that." She mumbled to herself, then looked up at Stefani and smiled. "Well, I um, I made a wish." She said stumbling over her words slightly.

"Has it come true yet?" Mykah asked curiously, his skepticism showing clearly.

Shennan smiled sadly. "You know what? I think that it had, but I was too blind to even see it." She said watching Mykah's disbelieving face. "Don't you believe in wishes, Mykah?" She asked softly.

He was thoughtful for a moment, before he shook his head, "No." He replied carelessly.

With her face falling, Shennan told him to get ready for a small trip. Stefani asked if she could come along, but she asked her not to. Saying that she and Mykah had something important to talk about. Stefani nodded and understood.

-

Shennan sat Mykah on the rim of the fountain. She looked at the clear blue water and instructed him to do so also. "Every coin in there is a wish. Someone who needs something or wants something that they think they deserve."

"But not everyone gets what they deserve." He stated softly.

Knowing he was talking of his mother, Shennan slowly nodded. "True, but sometimes, just sometimes, if a wish is true and from the heart, it just might come true."

"What did you wish for?" He asked.

"I would love to tell you, but a wish is a private thought. And if I tell you, my wish won't be true anymore." She explained.

Mykah nodded slowly and went back to looking at the water. "Do you have a coin?" He asked softly.

Shennan smiled weakly and nodded. She dug into her pocket and pulled out a silver dollar. As she handed it to him, she told him what to do. "Think of what you want most, that is reasonable." She added. "Then kiss the coin, make your wish, and toss it into the fountain."

He did as she instructed. Upon hearing the coin dropping into the water, he slowly opened his eyes. "Now what?" He asked looking to his older sister.

"Now you may have to wait a while, before it comes true." She said as she took his hand and stood up.

-

"So what happened?" Stefani asked when Shennan and Mykah walked in the door. She was sitting on the couch, next to Taylor.

Mykah smiled. "Nothing." He said shaking his head. Then he ran out into the backyard.

Taylor looked at him in shock at first, then in awe.

"You okay, Taylor?" She asked giggling.

"I thought he couldn't talk." Taylor said as he looked at her.

Shennan became serious. "He does know how to talk. It's just for a while, he never talked to anyone but me." She said sitting in an armchair.

"I've been meaning to ask why." Stefani said as she snuggled against Taylor.

He hugged her closer to him, and looked at Shennan expectantly.

Sighing, she took a deep breath. Stefani was her sister. She did deserve to know. "Mykah's mother didn't have a very strong heart." She started. "And when she had Mykah, it became weaker."

Slowly she sank into the arm chair next to the couch, "She over-worked herself one day, while she and him were playing some game." She said shaking her head.

"When she collapsed on the floor, Mykah still thought she was playing. He was laughing at first, and started pushing her. Telling her to get up." Shennan swallowed, her mouth suddenly dry. "She never did."

She started fidgeting with the hem of her shirt, "When I came home from school, he told me what happened, and I had to call for help."

"The cops kept having him tell them the story over and over again. So when the day ended, he had relived it about twenty times over."

Shennan raised her head and looked up at them then, "He stopped talking to everyone but me."

"Whoa." Taylor breathed out, "I'd never talk to anyone again either."

Stefani nodded in agreement with Taylor. "That's awful." She said softly. "Poor Mykah!"

She looked up at them. "That's why I'm so protective over him." She said fingering the bandage, still over her right eye.

"When do you get the stitches out?" Stefani asked.

"In about an hour." She said checking her watch. "I need Ryan to run me to the hospital, so that I can get these damn plasters removed."

Taylor started laughing. "Good luck. He went to go meet his girlfriend. She just got back from a vacation with her family. And you're going to be waiting for more than an hour if you wait for him."

She started sulking for a moment. "Now how am I going to get there?" She asked.

"I would say ask my parents, but they took Jess, Avery, and Zoë out for some odd reason. " Taylor explained.

"Umm, that does leave Isaac though, Shennan." Stefani said suggestively.

"I guess I have to, because I am not walking there." She grumbled distastefully. Actually she was quite please to be spending more time with him.

Taylor started laughing some more. "Just please don't kill each other if you do."

She nodded, as she started to leave the room. "We'll try not to." She called over her shoulder.

Shennan walked into the backyard and saw Zac playing with Mackie and Mykah. She smiled as she walked up to them.

"Hey, Zac. Mackie." She said smiling at them both. "Where's Isaac? I need a ride to the hospital, to get the stitches removed." She explained.

Zac looked up at her and smiled. "You must have no other way of getting there, huh?" He said laughing.

She nodded. "Yep. So where is he?"

He nodded his head towards his house. "He's watching TV."

"Thanks." She called over her shoulder as she started across to Hanson's yard.

She crept silently into the house through the back door. As she closed the door, careful not to make as sound, she heard music coming from the front room. Walking through the small hallway, that lead to the living room, she saw that the TV was on. But no one was watching it.

Then someone tapped her lightly on the shoulder, causing her to jump.

"You need to be more quiet when you sneak up on someone." Isaac said smiling.

Shennan smirked at him, and shrugged. "Oh, well. I'll just have to learn that sometime." She said rolling her eyes.

Isaac smiled, "Interested in taking lessons?" He asked.

She smiled sweetly, "Depends on who the teacher is." She replied.

"Me." He said seriously.

"No." She replied simply. "But I do need you to give me a ride."

"Where to?" He asked sighing.

"The hospital. These are coming out." She explained fingering the bandage above her eye.

Isaac shrugged. "Okay. When?"

Shennan checked her watch. "Now would be good." She said smiling.

Laughing, Isaac nodded. "Okay, come on." He said grabbing his car keys and holding the front door open for her.

She looked over at him strangely, but walked out, "Thanks." She said as she quickly went to the passenger side of his car and hopped in before he could get the chance to open that door for her too.

"Your welcome." He said as he slid into the driver's seat. He started the engine, and backed out of the driveway.
