Zac aimlessly walked around the house, his head hung low and his mind only half concentrating on counting his steps. The doctor's exam and the psychiatrist appointment that he had earlier that day left him exhausted, but still antsy.
"You know, this is the second time you've passed through the family room." Jessie announced without looking up from her Literature book she was studying from.
He shrugged his shoulders carelessly, ran a hand through his dirty hair, and plopped down on the couch next to her before sighing loudly. "You ever get the feeling that everything you thought was going to happened, turned out to be something totally different?" He asked warily.
Jessie looked up at him curiously. Her brother was asking her an intellectual question? This is new. She thought happily. Softly she cleared her throat. "It's called irony, I think." She said cautiously.
Zac nodded dully. "It is." He said, again he sighed and then shook his head. "I never thought that I would ever be blind in my entire life." He confessed quietly.
Lovingly, she placed her hand on his shoulder. "No one did."
He continued on, "And now that I am, I don't know if I want to have my sight back." The gasp she made made him hurry on with his explanation. "I've gotten used to this dark world, Jess." He paused for a second. "This dark life has brought me such pain but such comfort."
"At the beginning I wanted my sight back so bad, I couldn't handle the constant darkness…" He trailed off before going on. "But now I don't know, now I don't want it back."
Jessie swallowed hard. This was too hard for her, she wasn't used to being a confidant for her older brother, only for Avery... and she never had such things to say! She licked her dry lips and tried to speak, but words failed her for the moment.
It took a little while, but Zac finally stood up and ran his hand through his hair in frustration. "I'm sorry, Jessie." He mumbled ashamedly. "I shouldn't have said any of this to you."
Ruefully she gave him a sheepish smile. "I'm sorry I couldn't help you."
His bashful smile that he gave her warmed her a little bit, and she smiled to herself when he left.
Taking his walking into the garage, Zac dragged the stool from his drum set to behind Taylor's keyboards. Sitting down slowly, he ran his hands over the surface, flicking switches and turning it on.
The feeling was strangely odd, but eerily familiar. "If I see… everything will change again. Everything will be different all over again." He muttered quietly.
Running his fingers lightly over the keys, he started humming softly as a melody slowly started to emanate from the instrument.
When his fingers halted, and the music ceased clapping was came from the doorway. "Did you record that, Zac?" Isaac asked as he walked in.
He shook his head, "Wasn't even thinking about making it, it just came."
"Well do you remember it?" Taylor questioned walking up behind him.
Zac shrugged, "I should be able to." He replied slowly.
Taylor nodded thoughtfully, "I think you should re-do that and record it. It was really sweet."
"I don't know." He said self-consciously.
Smiling slightly, Isaac gave a small chuckle. "Come on, Zac." He coaxed. "It'd be a really good ballad."
Giving in, Zac finally nodded and gave his consent.
Grinning excitedly, Taylor found a blank tape and slid it into his keyboard. Hitting the record button, he patted Zac's shoulder lightly and went and sat down on the arm of the chair Isaac was already sitting in, in front of him.
Now nervous of the audience, Zac's hands slightly trembled, before he tried hard to remember the tune he had just played moments ago. Carefully and cautiously, his fingers started to glide of the cool ebony and ivory, the melody echoing loudly and clearly in his mind.
Don't mees up. He told himself firmly. Just don't mess up.
