Diana Hanson picked up the phone, “Hello?”
“Diana, this is Sophie.”
“Hello Sophie, long time no hear.”
“I can’t help that you’re boys are famous.” They both laughed. “Actually I have a major favor to ask.”
“What?”
“Okay, well I have this little girl here at the orphanage that needs a home real bad. I was hoping that you could take her.”
“My Sophie, that’s a lot to ask.”
“I know and I wouldn’t if it wasn’t so important. Diana, this eleven-year-old girl has been abused mentally, physically, and emotionally. She needs a lot of love and I know your family could provide the amount that she needs. At least come down here and watch her. Meet her and then discuss it with Walker and then tell me no.”
“Sophie….” Diana sighed. “Okay, we’ll be there in an hour.”
“Thank you, Diana.”
Diana rounded up Jessie, Avery, Mackie and Zoë. They got into the van and headed to the orphanage.
“Mommy, where are we going?” Avery asked.
“To an orphanage.”
“Why? You finally getting rid of Mackie?” Jessie joked.
“Don’t you say that, Jessie! There is a little girl that Aunt Sophie wants us to take.”
“Oh.” She said quietly.
The orphanage was noisy and Jessie, Avery, and Mackie stayed very close to Diana.
“Diana!” Sophie stated. She came over to the group.
“Hello Sophie.”
“I’m so glad you came…follow me. Her name is Amy.”
Diana was led to a doorway and on the bed was a small little girl holding a teddy bear as older kids pulled on her hair and smacked her with pillows. The girl had tears spilling from her eyes, but she made no effort to stop them from harming her.
Sophie sighed. “Children! Stop hurting Amy!”
All of the children scattered. “Amy, this is Diana and her children. Be nice.” Sophie smiled and patted the child on the head.
Diana went to the girl. “Hello Amy.”
“Hi…” she said in a whisper.
“Is this your bear?”
Amy clutched it tighter.
“It’s okay, I’m not gonna take it from you.” Diana sighed. She brushed the girl’s dirty blonde hair out of her eyes. “You have pretty blue eyes. Just like one of my sons.” She and the children sat with Amy for a while just talking to her and sitting with her.
Than night Diana called Walker in LA “Hey hon, how are you?”
“Not bad. How are the boys?”
“Fine. Tired. But fine.”
“Good. Walker, how do you feel about adopting?”
“Why?”
“There is this sweetest little girl at the orphanage Sophie works at. She needs a home.”
“There are a lot of kids that need a home.”
“Walker, she is so sad. She needs a lot of love. Our family can provide that.”
“If you think it’s the right thing to do, then I’m all for it. Go for it.”
“Okay, sounds good.”
“Love you.”
“Love you too. Tell the boys good night and that I love them”
“Will do, good night.”
“Dad, what’s goin’ on?”
“Isaac, how long have you been standing there?”
“Not long. Is everything okay with mom and the kids?” Isaac the forever-protective older brother sat next to his father.
Walker sighed. “You’re mom and I might be adopting a little girl.”
“Okay, isn’t seven children enough?” He joked.
“This little girl needs a lot of love and your Aunt Sophie seems to think that we would be the best people to provide that love.”
“Oh.”
Diana hung up with Walker and called Sophie.
“Diana… what’s the verdict? No, right?”
“Actually, we will take her.”
“Really? Thank you, Diana.”
“When should I come and get her?”
“Now if you could?”
“I’ll be there.”
Diana arrived and she watched Sophie help Amy pack her things.
“Amy honey, Diana will take real good care of you. Don’t be scared.” Any nodded.
“Jess, Avie, go help Amy get ready.”
“Okay, Mommy.”
“Diana.”
“Hey Sophie. Are there any details we should know about?”
“A few actually. Amy is eleven with and education of a six-year-old. And mentally she is about seven kinda. No one has every loved her or shone her affection. She’s been raped. Several times actually. She’s not in real good shape.”
“Okay.”
“Mommy, all of her stuff is together.”
“Thank you, Avery.”
They got home and Diana started putting everyone to bed. She hugged and kissed everyone.
“Are you hungry, Amy?”
“No, thank you anyway.”
“You are a polite little girl.” Diana smiled and stroked her hair. “Okay, well for tonight you can sleep in the boys’ room. They won’t be home till tomorrow night. By then I’ll have your bed set up with Avie and Jessie. Okay?”
She nodded.
Diana put Amy in a pair of Jessie’s shorts and Zac’s old shirts and they went into the boy’s room.
“Which bed do you want?”
“The top one.”
Diana helped her into the bunk and brushed her hair out of her face. “Good night, sweetie.”
Amy gave a hint of a smile.
