Not even three in the evening yet; Isaac took Dahven to his house to pick up Taylor and Zac so that they could raid the mall together.
The thing with friendships is that you never know if they are going to last, or fade away. Perhaps even die out. But always you find that one special friend that you just need to have, or you just feel lost and incomplete.
And while they did do a few autographs, Dahven beamed with happiness as she waited and watched.
They all started walking together down one side when Julia stepped in front of them.
"Uh, oh." Dahven murmured. "Witch alert." She warned them, as she stopped walking.
"Ike, will you take me to a movie tonight? There's this new one out that I have just gotta see." She said completely ignoring Dahven.
Dahven stepped between them. "I'm sorry, Isaac's not in right now. But if you'd like to leave a message, he'll get back to you at the turn of the century. If I don't erase your message." Dahven said smiling as the guy's stifled their laughter.
"Are you trying for the bitch award, Charm?" Julia asked coldly.
Dahven smiled even more, "As defending champion, Julia, are you nervous?" She challenged.
Julia raised her hand as if to slap Dahven, and in one fluid motion Dahven had the hand twisted behind her back.
"Now see what you have done?" Dahven asked harshly. "You screw with my life and you pay. Now you have already embarrassed yourself enough for one day. So why don't you leave and never come into my life again?"
Julia nodded her head slightly. "If you didn't want me here, Charm, why'd you practically force your father to hire mine and bring us back here?"
Dahven twisted her arm some more. "Because unlike you, I try to make my friends a little happy. Look it up one day and find out what it is." She said pushing Julia away.
"This isn't over, Charm." She said bitterly.
"Julia, it's over between you and me though. D told me everything." Isaac said quietly, but loud enough for her to hear.
Dahven then nodded, "Yes, it is." She told her. "It's over."
Releasing her, Dahven stepped back and shook her head. "Let's go."
Nodding in agreement, they surrendered their night.
He smiled at the thought of her doing something so special for him.
Dahven smiled and nodded, her head pillowed by the cool grass, looking at the stars and moon. "Yeah." She said softly. "I never knew you looked up at the sky at night, Isaac."
He laughed slightly. "It's a new habit."
"Oh." She mused staring up at Orion. "You asked me earlier about my wrist." She started, "I had to put a rubber band around it, and whenever I thought of you I snapped it. Needless to say I had to take it off after a few minutes because it was really starting to hurt."
Isaac rolled onto his side. "Why'd you send that song to me?"
She swallowed with difficulty, "Because you danced with Julia at our song. I thought that meant you only wanted Julia around."
The tears welled up in her eyes, but she wouldn't let any fall. Not when Julia was concerned. "And I didn't want you to have to face me and tell me that. So I sent I did it the best way I knew how to."
Isaac sat up in aggravation, "Julia messed up everything between us!"
Dahven rolled onto her stomach and stared up him. "What are you saying, Isaac?" She asked knowing that there was something that he was hiding.
And she knew that was starting to really bother him, which in turn, was really starting to bother her.
"Come and sit with me." He said getting up and moving toward the swing set.
Dahven slowly obeyed, sitting on one side, and crossing her legs between them. "Okay, so tell me now."
Isaac sighed. "D, I like you. A lot. Being best friends isn't enough. But if you don't want to make more of it, I understand." He said looking away.
Dahven stared at him in silence; and what seemed like forever, was actually a few seconds. "Okay, Isaac." She whispered softly.
His breath catched, "Okay, what?" He asked cautiously, looking her into her eyes.
Smiling, Dahven answered, "Let's make us something more." She said softly. "But promise me we won't hang on, out of friendship and loyalty. I don't want to lose my best friend because of it."
Isaac nodded. "I want the same."
She moved closer to him as he leaned forward to kiss her.
After a few minutes of tender kisses that exploded with emotions. Isaac pulled back.
"You should have told me, you know? That you wanted this too." He scolded playfully as he hugged her to him. He slowly ran his fingers through her hair, smelling the fresh scent of vanilla in it.
Dahven flinched slightly and pulled back to look at him. "Oh, really?" She asked, then mimed holding a phone to her ear; "Yeah, Isaac, your relationship with Julia seems to be going great. By the way would you dump her and go out with me, because I've fallen in love with you." She replied.
He laughed. "Okay, so that wouldn't have worked."
"Why, didn't you tell me sooner?" She asked quietly as she laid her head on his shoulder.
He shook his head, "Because at the time I realized how much I did love you I thought that you hated me. You didn't come when I wrote to you telling you to meet me so that we could talk. And I almost went crazy when Taylor told me you were going out with Shawn. I would've seemed like a total jerk if I told you when I thought that you hated me." He said softly in her ear.
"You wrote that letter?" She asked in shock.
Isaac nodded his head. "Who did you think wrote it?"
Dahven shrugged and shook her head roughly. "Definitely not you! You never call me Charm, and you've never signed your named Ike to me, and that wasn't even close to being your handwriting!"
Thinking all of that over, Isaac started laughing. "D, I never knew you noticed all of those things."
She smiled sheepishly, "Well, I do."
They were quiet for a moment and sunk into each others presence.
"So what do you think now, about my hating you?" She asked raising her head, staring into his eyes.
Isaac returned her stare; "Well, now I love you." He whispered.
She smiled. "I love you too." She whispered back.
They shared a kiss, then turned to stare up at the pale moon.
"Friends?" She started to ask it.
Isaac made her look him in the face. "Forever." He finished before kissing her again.
Dahven never felt complete without seeing Isaac or the Hanson family. They were her family when her own rejected and abandoned her.
So if and when you find that friend, hold on tight. Because holding on is what makes you live and letting go means you're letting a piece of yourself die.
