Skye was extra-slow about approaching the school the next morning. She didn't feel like rushing off like usual.

"Hey, Skye!" Mignette said, as she got closer to the building. Mignette pulled her up under the awning, where a small group of Juniors and Seniors had gathered. She recognized many of them from the day before, including Sister and Alicia.

"Well," Sis said, "Did you enjoy the meeting last night?"

Skye smiled, and said, "I liked the going home part."

There was a collective chuckle. A senior guy asked her, "Do you like the position Mignette nominated you for?"

Skye cringed. "Oh, yeah. My idea of fun..."

Mignette frowned. "I thought you'd like IT."

Skye's smile brightened. "I'm not complainin'. I get to boss around 15 kids, simultaneously, whenever I feel like it. Does this sound bad to you?"

Again the group smiled at her efforvescence. A small girl with short, dark curls smiled at her from across the group. "Aren't you on the basketball team?"

Skye blinked at her, then grinned. "Yeah. I do."

"That's right," the girl said, shaking her head. "You were the only starting freshman 3 years ago."

Skye blushed in the memory. Being 4 inches over all the other girls had it's advantages, basketball being prime reason numero uno. A more timid voice came from another girl, who Skye recognized as a cheerleader. "You're friends with that Hanson boy, right?"

Skye flinched. "Tay? Yeah..."

"Oh, he's cute," Mignette commented, smiling devilishly. A few of the girls nodded their heads in agreement. However, a girl with a flame of red hair was snorting.

"He's such a dork. I mean...he's so skinny. And what's with that hair?" she snapped.

Nissa Harmeyer, of course. Her thin figure was accentuated by her tight jeans and the clingy, shimmering sweater. Her hair fell in heavy, bright waves over her shoulders, and her long, dark lashes were lowered lazily over her green eyes. "Why on earth have you been hanging out with him?" she asked, directing her question to Skye. Skye's lip puckered and everyone looked at her.

"We grew up next door to each other," she said. "We were sorta raised as brother and sister."

Nissa arched a graceful eyebrow, but then smiled smugly. "Of course," she said. "Of course..."

The bell suddenly rang, sharply. Skye adjusted her book bag on the other shoulder, and hurried into the doors of the building. She wasn't even aware of the eyes boring into her back, watching her in confusion as she hurried down the opposite corridor from him, shiny black curls falling gracefully from a mound on her head.

And then, the crowd of students began to sweep him back down the hall, away from her. She escaped his view.
