William Jon Tabon

In my junior year of High School, I was formally introduced to the world of Art. Fortunately for me, I met a gifted and generous teacher who proved also to be a kind and caring mentor; Her name is Janet Sato, and I feel much gratitude for her instruction and support. She opened my creative eyes, expanded my imaginative mind, and unlocked the door to artistic expression.

It is my belief that our talent express our desire to learn and grow. Coming to the United States as a young boy from the Philippines, I had to struggle with a new language, a new culture, a new way of life. Often, I felt alone, on the “outside”. I did many things by myself as a child. I came to understand that although we need to “belong”, we are separate, and that we all see things quite differently. It’s all in the perspective.

When I looked at things around me, I looked closely and for long period of time, I studied the intricacies of things. I remember asking “What is that part?” and “What is it’s function?”. I saw how colors effect one another, and what those effects felt like. I looked at the shadows of objects, rather than the objects themselves. I saw the light and its absence. The more I tried to understand, the more questions would arises.

In all that I endeavor, I demand the best of myself. With art, that “BEST” is so elusive. There is always more to learn, more to see, more to share. The lessons that I learned long ago of separateness, and of the yearning for community with others, were invaluable to me. As an artist, I need to express my “Perspectives”, and as a human being, I want to share with my community the way that I see our world.

Art allows me to learn, to grow, to express, to dream, to give a physical form to all that is being felt within. Our creations are windows to our souls. I enjoy the challenge to create, and the satisfaction that comes when dreams are realized.

I hope you enjoy my dreams.
