MEMORY VERSE

"How did Jesus show His concern for our spiritual needs?"

"For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believeth in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life. For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world; but that world though him might be saved." John 3:16-17

Sharing our faith with Mormons By Herb Stoneman

Are Mormons Christians? A few weeks ago on a Salt Lake television program, I had the opportunity to discuss this question. My answer to the question was simple "no." My answer was not based in prejudice. It was not another form of "Mormon bashing." It was a declaration which, until a few years ago, would have been echoed by members of the LDS faith.

Joseph Smith, in founding the LDS church, separated himself from orthodox Christianity. When he said, "All their creeds are an abomination" any common ground between his new faith and the faith of the ages ended. When he declared that all other churches were "apostate," he severedties with Christianity. Christians were described as being totally without truth. It seems strange that a group with those basics for belief would seek to be identified with us.

The LDS church, in 1998, is interested in gaining a position of "respectability" in the community of faith. It is seeking to alter the true perception of its doctrine. When the "prophet seer and revelator" denies that the doctrine of the church's teaching, he is practicing deception. When belittling a tenet that is encompassed in the couplet, "As man is, God once was. As God is, man may become," he denied the heart of Mormonism. Of course, a few days later, during the General Conference of the LDS Church he said that he was misquote.

People like Jimmy Carter, former president of the United States, have been led to accept false teachings because of the use of the same worlds to mean greatly different things. God, Jesus, the Hole Ghost, the Trinity, the gospel, all are totally different. By the use of family themes in advertising, there has been an acceptance of the LDS church without knowledge of its belief systems.

We must be prepared to share our faith with our Mormon neighbors. As we approach the Southern Baptist Convention meeting coming to Salt Lake City, we will face increased opportunities to tell others "Good News." Make sure you are a messenger of hope in a world of darkness.
