SWIMMING POOLS

The increasing concern for camels also has led to the development of new training and exercise programs, including the use of specially designed swimming pools where the camel may swim and bathe.

Swimming differs from running, which is exhausting for both the animal and its trainer. Water pressure and tension help the camel to relax. Pool training is better than running, especially for a camel that is suffering from myosderosis, which makes running difficult and often painful.

Some breeders say that a five-minute swim is better exercise than a 20-kilometre run.

Swimming is monitored by specialized veterinarians who oversee the camel's condition before and after each session, and who follow up on the training program. It is their responsibility to see that an ill animal does not enter the water.

Pools are equipped with filters and the water is changed every 48 hours.
