NAMES AND AGES OF CAMELS

Camels have many names, which differ according to tribe, tradition and habits. The following definitions classify the camel’s development and growth. Feminine derivatives are placed in parenthesis, following the masculine word:

Howar (Howarah): From birth until the age of one year.

Mofradah (Mafrooda): From one to two years of age. After the animal is weaned, it is called al fassil “Weaned.

Haj (Hejja): From two to three years of age. The animal also is called Mekhad or Wolad Al Laboun.

Lega (Legyah or Mazraba): From three to four years of age. Ath this time, the female is capable of conceiving, but the male is not mature enough to mate.

Yazzaa (Yazah): From four to five years of age.

Thana (Thanya): From five to six years of age. At this age, the male will attempt to mate, but still is not fully mature.

Rabbaa (Rabbaah): From six to seven years of age. At this age, the male is capable of mating successfully.

Al Zamool (Al Hool): A seven-year-old camel. This is the best age for the animal to race.

bullet

Sodais (Sodaisiya): From seven to eight years of age. At this age, the camel has become efficient and strong.

bullet

Awal Fitr: From eight to nine years of age. The female is referred to as fater, while the male is called baer.

Al Dhoud: Between two and 10 years of age.
