All songs written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney except
"Octopus's Garden" (Richard Starkey), "Something" and "Here
Comes The Sun" (George Harrison).
Producer - George Martin
Engineer - Geoff Emerick
Personnel:
John Lennon - guitar, keyboards, vocals
George Harrison - guitar, vocals, synthesizer
Paul McCartney - bass, piano, guitar, vocals
Ringo Starr - drums, vocals, percussion
Notes -
Eric Clapton has been rumored to have played on several songs on this album.
Those rumors are false and have no basis in fact.
However, there is some relationship with this album:
'Here Comes The Sun' was written by George Harrison whilst sitting in
Eric Clapton's garden.
Besides, this album ranks as one of the Greatest Rock Albums of All Time
and should belong in any one's collection (IMHO). - JCH

CD Now -
ABBEY ROAD, recorded in the summer of 1969, was the last
album recorded by the Beatles (LET IT BE was released in 1970,
but recorded in early '69).
The superb musical and vocal performances made ABBEY ROAD a
highlight for all the members of the group. Paul McCartney
inspired the suite of songs that begins with "You Never Give Me
Your Money" (often thought of as two long medleys, the songs
that fill most of the second-half of ABBEY ROAD segue
seamlessly into one another, but are programmed as separate
CD tracks). George Harrison had his first A-side on a Beatles'
single ("Something"); John Lennon contributed a pair of heavy
rockers ("Come Together" and "I Want You"); and Ringo Starr's
"Octopus's Garden" was a favorite with children.
Down Beat -
4 Stars - Very Good - "...What is it that makes the Beatles so
likeable? Maybe it's that they never seem to strain for effects
yet are meticulous craftsman; that their humor, even when
rather gruesome ...is never offensive; that their satire is never
malicious; their lyricism never maudlin, but their work still has
punch and conviction...genuine musicality and poetic
imagination..."

American Music Guide
A double-album release from {Mrs. Lennon.} While the first disc contains real songs, such as the rockin' "Midsummer New York" and the gentle love ballad "Mrs. Lennon," disc two contains more avant-garde doodlings that {Yoko} was known for at the time. The side-long cut entitled "Fly" is soundtrack material from {John} and {Yoko's} film of the same name. If you tend to ignore her weird stuff, stick to disc one, because there are some good tunes to be found there. All in all, a split decision. The 1997 CD reissue adds a couple of previously unreleased bonus tracks: "Between the Takes," a wordless improvisation typical of her jams of the time, and an acoustic version of "Will You Touch Me" with {John Lennon} on guitar.

UNFINISHED MUSIC NO. 2: LIFE WITH THE LIONS
through "STAPEACE". Previously unreleased material
includes the "A STORY" LP recorded during 1973-74, while
Ono was separated from John Lennon.
The packaging includes a 96-page CD-sized booklet with
lyrics to all of the songs. and liner notes by Robert Palmer.
The box itself was designed by Roger Gorman, who also
designed David Bowie's SOUND + VISION box set. The set
contains 105 songs.

4 Stars - Excellent - "..That Yoko Ono made music of
marginal worth is repudiated once and for all by this lavish,
illuminating six-CD overview of her remarkable pop
life...music that once seemed alienating now sounds
startlingly prescient and charged with contentious
passion...This thoughtful restoration of the Ono canon
defintively affirms the vitality and, to some degree, belated
accessibility of her work.."
Rolling Stone 5/14/92, p.104
Entertainment Weekly
"..gives Yoko Ono the avant garde heroine her due...The way
she invents what others take for granted, renewing the
ordinary by finding it odd, turns this collision of rock's
primitive energy and performance art's self-dramatization
into a preview of today's musical hybrids...ONOBOX sums up
an honorable, radical, difficult career.." - Rating: A-

Although it inspires countless jokes, the music on the six-disc =Onobox= is, by and large, quite impressive. In terms of experimental rock & roll, Ono was certainly one of the leaders in the 1970s, creating intense, almost atonal rock that demanded to be accepted on its own terms. Nearly twenty years later, some of the music sounds dated, but much of it sounds remarkably contemporary. Nevertheless, the box is rarely dull and makes a strong case for her musical talents.

AMG Biograph
Delaney Bramlett (b Jul 1, 1939) and his wife Bonnie (b Nov 8, 1944) recorded a series of blues and country influenced albums in the late '60s and early '70s. A variety of musicians played in Delaney and Bonnie's band, including Eric Clapton, Dave Mason, Duane Allman, Leon Russell, Rita Coolidge, Jim Gordon, Bobby Whitlock, and Carl Radle; Clapton, Gordon, Whitlock, and Radle formed Derek & The Dominoes after performing together on Delaney & Bonnie's 1969-70 tour. Delaney & Bonnie's records were a strong influence on Eric Clapton's style in the '70s. The group broke up after The Bramletts' marriage collapsed in 1972.

Has the same feel (and personnel) as Delaney & Bonnie & Friends
but also shows a stronger electric side.
Dave Mason was with Derek & The Dominos at the start of their association

and played live with them at the beginning and during the

Review
Rolling Stone
"...the music is vintage Mason...Mason's singing is simply
superb..."
Rolling Stone 9/3/70, p.42
American Music Guide
{Dave Mason's} first solo album was one of several recordings to come out of the {Leon Russell}/{Delaney & Bonnie Bramlett} axis in 1970. (Other notables included {Eric Clapton's} solo debut and {Joe Cocker's} =Mad Dogs and Englishmen.=) =Alone Together= contains an excellen batch of melodically pleasing songs, built on a fat bed of strumming acoustic guitars with tasteful electric guitar accents and leads. {Mason's} vocals are embellished with harmonies from {Rita Coolidge,} {Claudia Lennear,} and {Delaney & Bonnie Bramlett.}
Besides the well-known semi-hit "Only You Know and I Know," which was also a number 20 hit for the {Bramletts,} highlights include the bouncy gospel-inflected "Waitin' on You," and the banjo-bejeweled "Just a Song." "Look at You Look at Me" and the wonderfully wah-wahed "Shouldn't Have Took More Than You Gave" are reminiscent of {Mason's} former band, {Traffic,} whose drummer, {Jim Capaldi} is among the all-star cast assembled here.
=Alone Together= represents {Dave Mason} at his peak. Later releases would betray lyrical shallowness, forced rhymes and cliched guitar licks. But here, everything comes together perfectly. The original vinyl release of =Alone Together= was also noteworthy for the marble grain of the record itself -- as the record played on the turntable, the tonearm appeared to be floating through the clouds.

Wilson & Alroys Record Reviews
This was the first of quite a few Dave Mason solo records. Guests include Capaldi, Jim Gordon, Leon Russell, Rita
Coolidge, and Delaney and Bonnie
- all of them except Capaldi appeared on Eric Clapton's debut solo album, which seems to have been recorded concurrently. (emphasis mine - JCH) The single was "Only You Know And I Know." (JA)

Review
CD Now
With this, his first solo album, Eric Clapton did a complete
360 from his work of the previous five years. Gone were the
long, jazzy solos and rootsy Chicago blues work. In their place,
Clapton was stretching as a singer and seeking to define his
own song forms, inspired by the Beatles, the Band, and his
new found collaborators from the southern R&B circuit,
Delaney And Bonnie.
ERIC CLAPTON marks Clapton's first use of the Fender
Stratocaster. Its high, wirey, percussive sound stands in stark
contrast to the dark, fat, singing Gibson sounds Clapton had
perfected with John Mayall, Cream and Blind Faith. This
new Clapton sound is quite striking, from the twangy leads on
his opening instrumental "Slunky," to the cutting feints and
jabs which transform J.J. Cale's "After Midnight" into a
Clapton signature piece.
Positioned as it is between the legendary BLIND FAITH and
LAYLA sessions, ERIC CLAPTON has long been underrated
by fans and critics alike, but the roots of much of what
Clapton's done since 461 OCEAN BOULEVARD can be
found here: the pithy melodic style of "Blues Power," the
country/gospel overtones of "Bottle Of Red Wine," and the
confessional tone of "Let It Rain." In addition, ERIC
CLAPTON is significant both as a showcase for Clapton's
emerging vocal stylings and as a proving ground for his
Dominoes rhythm section of drummer Jim Gordon, bassist
Carl Radle and keyboardist/vocalist Bobby Whitlock.
American Music Guide
{Eric Clapton's} eponymous solo debut was recorded after he completed a tour with {Delaney & Bonnie.} {Clapton} used the core of the duo's backing band and co-wrote the majority of the songs with {Delaney Bramlett} - accordingly, =Eric Clapton= sounds more laidback and straightforward than any of the guitarist's previous recordings. There are still elements of blues and rock & roll, but they're hidden beneath layers of gospel, R&B, country, and pop flourishes. And the pop element of the record is the strongest of the album's many elements -- "Blues Power" isn't a blues song and only "Let It Rain," the album's closer, features extended solos. Throughout the album, {Clapton} turns out concise solos that de-emphasize his status as guitar god, even when they display astonishing music ability and technique. That is both a good and a bad thing -- it's encouraging to hear him grow and become a more fully rounded musician, but too often the album needs the spark that some long guitar solos would have given it. In short, it needs a little more of {Clapton's} personality.

American Music Guide
The first album co-billed to {John Lennon} and {Yoko Ono} to actually contain recognizable pop music,=Sometime in New York City= found the Lennons in an explicitly political phase, expounding on such topical subjects as the Attica prison riot and the treatment of activists {John Sinclair} and {Angela Davis.} Especially in the case of {Lennon}'s songs, there is an appealing rock style to the material, even if the lyrics limit the record's appeal. =Sometime in New York City= was originally released with a free bonus disc that contained a live medley of {Lennon}'s "Cold Turkey" and {Ono's} "Don't Worry Kyoko," and an appearance by the Lennons at a {Mothers of Invention} concert. This slight material now makes the album a two-CD set, and it is priced accordingly. ~ William Ruhlmann, All-Music Guide
